Overview

Auburn University Libraries is seeking applicants for the position of Student Assistant in the Circulation Unit. This role supports faculty, staff, and students by assisting with the daily operations of the unit. Student assistants may work up to 20 hours per week, depending on operational needs.

Library Hours (Fall & Spring)
  • Sun 12:45pm-midnight
  • M-Th 7:15am-midnight
  • Fri 7:15am-9pm
  • Sat 8:45am-6:15pm
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct service to library patrons at the Circulation/Mell Desk, including checking materials in and out, answering questions, and directing patrons.
  • Assist patrons with using the online catalog, locating materials, and searching for resources.
  • Perform alphanumeric sorting and shelving using the Library of Congress classification system.
  • Conduct shelf reading, straighten materials, and clear browsed items from public areas.
  • Answer telephone calls, respond to inquiries, and transfer calls.
  • Update records and perform general data entry.
  • Assist with processing and maintaining the course reserves collection.
  • Assist patrons with understanding library fines and fees.
  • Conduct inventory of the RBD book collection using the Shelf Lister program on an iPad.
  • Search for and retrieve missing or trace‑requested items.
  • Recycle withdrawn materials.
  • Collect materials from the processing area for shelving.
  • Prepare and replace range labels as needed.
  • Perform forward and back‑ward shifting of materials to maintain shelf space.
  • Apply labels and stickers to library materials.
  • Run reports and assist with basic financial tracking.
  • Research patron account issues.
  • Accept and process payments.
  • Update patron financial records in Voyager, including processing payments and fee adjustments.
  • Educate patrons and the public on library policies, including borrowing privileges, fines, and services for community users.
  • Assign and inspect study carrels.
  • Assist with maintenance of reserves and new book collections, including processing lists.
Student Lead (as applicable)

After completing at least one semester in RBD, high‑performing student assistants may be selected to serve as Student Lead. In addition to the responsibilities listed above, duties include:

  • Responding to building and patron emergencies.
  • Lead student employee team and ensuring completion of assigned duties.
  • Report facility maintenance issues.
  • Open and close the building and ensure all patrons have exited at closing time.
Qualifications
  • Enrolled student at Auburn University.
  • All application questions must be completed.
  • Must provide detailed availability for each day of the week within library operating hours.

  • Ability to multitask and work effectively in a fast‑paced environment.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to perform tasks that may include standing, walking, reaching, handling materials, and occasionally lifting or moving items weighing up to 25 pounds.
