Position: Miller Writing Center Peer Consultant Fall 2026/Spring 2027

Miller Writing Center Peer Consultant

The Miller Writing Center (MWC) invites applications for peer consultants, who assist fellow students with writing and communication projects through one-on-one and small-group tutoring sessions. Successful candidates will begin asynchronous online training in May 2026 and start to tutor in the writing center in August 2026, with the possibility of renewal in subsequent years.

We're looking for consultants who want to keep learning themselves and who are committed to helping writers learn strategies and make choices, not just polishing a draft.

The MWC seeks to employ students with different language backgrounds, life experiences, areas of expertise, knowledge, perspectives, and strengths. Candidates from any academic discipline are encouraged to apply as long as their interests and/or career goals align with the work of the Miller Writing Center and University Writing.

Employment eligibility verification:
Students offered the job will need to complete the hiring process with Human Resources by May 1, 2026, which will likely entail a face-to-face employment eligibility verification appointment where you must present original identity and employment authorization documents.

Training requirement:
New peer consultants are required to complete a practicum via Canvas, requiring several hours per week over the summer semester (May 18 to August 16, 2026). The lessons will be delivered asynchronously, so they can fit into other summer work. All training is paid.

Time commitment:
Students are expected to work between 10–20 hours/week (0.25-0.5 full-time equivalent [FTE]) in Fall 2025 and Spring 2026. The MWC guarantees 10 hours of paid worktime per week during the semester (9 hours of consulting shifts plus 1 hour of professional development); additional work hours may be available depending on staffing.

Compensation:
Undergraduate peer consultants will receive an hourly wage of $15.00/hour with $0.25/hour increases in subsequent years. Graduate peer consultants will earn $17.00/hour. This position is not eligible for tuition remission or any other benefits.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with students across disciplines on a range of writing, oral presentation, and multimedia projects, providing guidance on the composing processes, genre, audience, structure, design, citation, grammar, presentation, and other rhetorical elements
  • Help clients achieve their academic and professional communication goals with a focus on their long-term learning.
  • Communicate clearly, quickly, and responsibly with clients, full-time staff members, front desk representatives, and other consultants
  • Promote the writing center through class presentations, information tables, and other events
  • Responsibly utilize the online data management platform (Advise and Assist)
  • Complete appointment report forms and message clients after sessions are finished
  • Maintain the confidentiality of client records
  • Work regular weekly shifts as assigned
  • Participate in required trainings, meetings, and professional development activities as assigned

Qualifications:

Enrolled student at Auburn University

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Student (undergraduate or graduate) at Auburn University during the 2026–2027 academic year
  • Availability for several hours of paid asynchronous training per week over the summer term
  • Availability for 10–20 hours per week of work at the Miller Writing Center in fall and spring semesters. If you have another job on campus requiring you to work more than 10 hours per week (>0.25 FTE), including a graduate assistantship, you will not be eligible to work for the MWC due to Auburn University's employment limits
  • Good academic standing for all semesters employed

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Dedication to supporting peers' learning and growth
  • Strong interpersonal communication and active listening skills
  • Commitment to treating others with kindness, empathy, dignity, and respect
  • Rhetorical awareness and the ability to think critically about academic writing
  • Curiosity and openness to learning and growth as both a communicator and a consultant
  • Integrity and reliability
