Overview

POSITION
:
Assistant/Associate Professor. This is a nine-month tenure-track position in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching beginning August 2027. This faculty member will be hired to support the Music Education program, which offers Bachelors in Music Education, Masters, Education Specialist, and PhD degrees designed to prepare classroom teachers, band directors, choir/choral directors, and music education scholars. In addition to educator preparation, the faculty member will be expected to generate new knowledge through scholarship and research in their area of expertise.

Responsibilities DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Teach undergraduate, master’s, education specialist, and doctoral level courses in support of the Music Education program
  • Supervise undergraduate teaching interns
  • Engage in creative endeavors and rigorous research resulting in scholarly publications, preferably peer-reviewed journal articles in prestigious outlets
  • Secure extramural research funding as appropriate to disciplinary focus
  • Advise and mentor graduate students
  • Direct student scholarship, including graduate research papers, field projects, and dissertations
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of curricular changes for the program and department
  • Provide institutional service as assigned by the department head and engage in professional service within the discipline
  • Participate in professional activities as needed to ensure the well-being of the program, department, and college

Qualifications REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR ASSISTANT PROFESSOR APPLICANTS
  • Earned doctorate in Music Education or a related field at the time employment begins.
  • At least three years of experience teaching in a K-12 music education classroom setting
  • Experience or demonstrated potential to teach undergraduate courses, supervise student teaching interns, and teach graduate courses within the program’s degree offerings
  • Record of research activity aligned with the field of music education
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Commitment to the values and priorities of the College of Education as outlined in the strategic plan and its mission.
  • Evidence of extramural support or of the potential to be successful in securing extramural support
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR APPLICANTS
  • Each of the required qualifications listed above for assistant professor candidates
  • Evidence of promotion to the rank of associate professor or higher at an accredited institution of higher education
  • Demonstrated track record of peer-reviewed research, scholarship, and creative endeavors in Music Education
  • Evidence of an emerging national reputation in Music Education
  • Mentorship experience with graduate students
  • Demonstrated experience in program development
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR ASSISTANT PROFESSOR CANDIDATES
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications in music education or aligned areas
  • Record of supervising student teaching interns
  • Experience in obtaining external funding to support teaching and scholarship
  • Experience teaching music education methods
  • Experience supervising student teaching interns
  • Record of teaching in-person (on campus), hybrid, and distance learning modalities.
  • Active participation in national professional organizations
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR CANDIDATES
  • Each of the desired qualifications listed above for assistant professor candidates
  • Record of teaching courses at the graduate level
  • Record of mentoring doctoral students in music education
  • Evidence of national reputation in music education, as demonstrated through recognition from one’s professional organization(s) or in other documented ways
  • Record of collaboration across the department, university, and/or the field of music education
  • Record of securing extramural funding to support one’s scholarly endeavors
