Overview

Assistant Professor, Public History (U.S.)

The Department of History at Auburn University seeks applications for a tenure-track appointment in public history at the rank of assistant professor with a focus on community-engaged work in post-1945 U.S. history.

Review of applications will begin on October 23, 2026 and will continue until a suitable candidate is selected.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will develop upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of specialty and contribute to Auburn's core U.S. history curriculum (in-person instruction). Contributions to the general upper-level U.S. curriculum will also be required occasionally.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in History or a related field is required; outstanding candidates who are ABD will be considered but completion of the degree is expected prior to the start of the appointment on August 16, 2027.

Candidates must provide a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a writing sample of no more than 25 pages, and the names and contact information for three referees. Letters of recommendation, official transcripts, teaching materials, and other materials may be requested after the initial review.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The candidate selected must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled and continue working legally during employment.
