This position will be located at The Energy Center in Birmingham, AL.
PLEASE NOTE This posting serves to fill multiple Designer positions in our Mechanical Design Engineering group.
WORK SCHEDULE & TRAVEL- Position located in Birmingham, AL.
- Hybrid work schedule: four days in-office and one day telecommute (subject to adjustment).
- Requires a mix of field and office work.
- Field work may include site visits to generating facilities and may require overnight travel.
- Requires travel (day and overnight, up to 25%) and the ability to work remotely with internet service.
- Relocation assistance may be provided if candidate does not live within reasonable commute.
This position is responsible for mechanical design work and preparation of deliverables to support Southern Company’s Mechanical Design Group for new generation and retrofit projects at generating plants with an emphasis on safety, quality, scheduling, costs, and customer satisfaction.
The Designer shall develop, prepare, check, and coordinate designs, drawings, and other documents required for plant mechanical systems or components according to applicable codes and standards. The candidate should have solid 3D CAD modeling and piping design skills, perform site walkdowns, prepare and oversee mechanical power system designs including P&IDs, piping isometrics, general arrangement drawings, and equipment or commodity specifications, and be thoroughly familiar with piping design and ANSI/ASME codes.

- Make SAFETY our number one priority using a “Safety First” mentality and leading by example.
- Must have the ability to work as a leader or team member to prepare high quality design packages needed to construct (new or modify existing) mechanical systems and facilities using CAD-based tools, based on Southern Company design standards.
- Develop scope definition, provide schedule input, create material takeoffs, and review fabrication drawings.
- Coordinate work with other disciplines, clients, suppliers, and contractors.
- Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and Southern Company personnel to resolve standards and material issues.
- Review and coordinate vendor design document reviews to ensure conformance to design requirements.
- Provide support to Discipline Leads, Construction Services, Field Services, Project Management, Startup and Site Personnel.
- Perform site visits for projects, including pre‑construction meetings, during construction and post‑construction. Assist with system checkout and startup when necessary. Some overnight travel will be required.
- Participate in design review meetings.
- Provide work direction and oversight for junior designers and drafters.
- Handle multiple tasks simultaneously, set priorities, and use effective time management and organizational skills to achieve project team goals.
- Ability to adapt to changing project requirements and customer needs.
- High school graduate or equivalent. Additional technical training preferred (technical school or software provider).
- Experience in the design of new construction and power generation facility retrofit projects or similar heavy industrial facilities.
- 3D modeling experience or ability to learn 3D software.
- Autodesk Plant 3D modeling experience and proficiency is highly desired.
- Possess abilities to conduct design functions and discipline scope management with little or no supervision.
- Detailed knowledge of mechanical engineering drawing principles and preparation of deliverables.
- Extensive AutoCAD and 3D modeling software experience. Ability to learn new 3D design and business unit software.
- Ability to apply value-added solutions.
- Detailed knowledge of cost estimating and quantity takeoffs.
- Detailed knowledge of construction methods, equipment, techniques and associated costs.
- Demonstrated ability to read, interpret and apply design criteria and government regulations to design and construction drawings.
- Ability to make independent decisions with minimal information and little consultation with management is required.
