The individual selected for this position will be responsible for coordinating the peanut disease research program. The individual will also be expected to assist in managing Official Variety trials for cotton, corn, grain sorghum, peanut, ryegrass, small grains, and soybeans. This position is located at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama.

Essential Functions
  • Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Assists in the development of project proposals, plans and protocols for the peanut disease research program.
  • Assists with the management and maintenance of Official Variety Trials such as peanut, small grains, and others as needed.
  • Collects research data including disease ratings and yield parameters by traveling to AAES research stations across Alabama.
  • Assists with recording, compiling, and processing data and research records. Some data analysis may be required.
  • Documents research results and observations in writing as well as presenting results to others as needed.
  • May assist in the preparation of research results for publication or presentations at professional meetings and conferences.
  • May assist in training/supervising undergraduate and graduate students in the field.
  • Interacts with a variety of individuals and groups for AAES field days and presentations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

Research Assistant I

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Plant Pathology, Entomology, Agronomy, Soil Science, or closely related field; no experience required.

Research Assistant II

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Plant Pathology, Entomology, Agronomy, Soil Science, or closely related field and 2 years of experience in scientific research related to plant pathology, agronomy, or similar field.

Indicated education is required; no substitutions allowed.

  • When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to collect, organize, and analyze data from plot-scale research trials.
  • Ability to think analytically, ability to work independently and with others, highly organized, ability to communicate research findings to a diverse group of stakeholders, and ability to or learn how to perform basic statistical analysis.
  • Must be able to lift at least fifty pounds, operate farm equipment, and walk up to three miles a day, as field work is a large component of this position. Frequent travel throughout the state of Alabama will be required, and the individual must be able to haul large machinery.
  • Minimum Technology Skills
    :
    Familiarity with Microsoft Office
  • Minimum License and Certifications
    : A valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one prior to employment.
