Job Summary

The individual selected for this position will provide professional-level assistance with research related to fish parasites and disease. This is a limited-term appointment funded from external sources. Continuation of employment is contingent upon the availability of funds.

Essential Functions
  • Conduct screening and diagnosis of fish pathogens on hatchery or wild fish
  • Perform necropsies and collect samples to detect viral, bacterial, fungal, or parasitic fish pathogens
  • Maintain bacterial agars and virological medias; isolate and plate bacteria and viruses
  • Manage and maintain lab equipment and inventory; conduct research and write papers and submit for peer review and publication if appropriate
  • Write case reports to deliver results to state, federal, or private producers and perform other duties assigned by supervisor

Travel may be required to hatcheries or field areas, meetings, site visits, and workshops throughout the year.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Research Associate II:
    Master’s degree in Fisheries, Aquaculture, or closely related field and 2 years of experience in research practices and protocols relevant to the position.
  • Research Associate III:
    Master’s degree in Fisheries, Aquaculture, or closely related field and 4 years of experience in research practices and protocols relevant to the position.
  • Research Associate IV:
    Master’s degree in Fisheries, Aquaculture, or closely related field and 6 years of experience in research practices and protocols relevant to the position.

Indicated education is required; no substitutions allowed.

Substitution allowed for

Experience:

When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.

Valid driver’s license required.

Minimum

Skills and Abilities

Excellent interpersonal communication skills.

Minimum Technology Skills

Computer skills in using programs such as Excel, ArcGIS, and SAS are helpful.

Minimum License and Certifications

Valid driver’s license required.

  • Experience with performing diagnostic tests with microbiology and/or virology in a lab setting
