Overview
This is a full-time, one-year limited position. Continuation of employment is contingent upon the availability of funding.
College of Veterinary Medicine seeks candidates for a Research Assistant I/II/III/IV.
The research assistant position will support ongoing NIH-funded studies investigating mechanisms of alcohol-associated organ injury, with emphasis on autophagy, lysosome biology, and gut-liver interactions. The individual will assist with daily laboratory operations, experimental procedures, data collection, and research activities that help accelerate project completion and support generation of high-quality data for current and future externally funded studies.
The individual will work closely with two experienced postdoctoral fellows, a part-time technician, and the Principal Investigator, contributing both technical expertise and scientific insight.
Responsibilities- Perform core laboratory techniques including:
- Mammalian cell culture using aseptic techniques
- Western blotting, RT-PCR, and immunostaining
- Assist with mouse colony maintenance, genotyping, and basic animal handling
- Generate, document, and analyze experimental data with strong attention to rigor and reproducibility
- Support ongoing projects for postdoctoral fellows and the PI
- Maintain laboratory organization, inventory, and compliance with NIH-funded research standards
- Participate actively in lab meetings and scientific discussions
- Contribute intellectually to experimental design and interpretation
- Develop and lead an independent project alongside collaborative work
The laboratory provides strong initial guidance and hands‑on support to help the candidate get started. However, this role requires prior laboratory experience so the individual can quickly understand techniques, expectations, and workflows, and progress toward working independently. Daily interactions with lab members will provide continued support, feedback, and scientific discussion.
Qualifications- Level I:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field – no experience required. - Level II:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 2 years of experience in research practices and protocols relevant to the position. - Level III:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 4 years of experience in research practices and protocols relevant to the position. - Level IV:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 6 years of experience in research practices and protocols relevant to the position.

When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.
