Overview
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Aquatic Animal Health Research Unit – Auburn, Alabama. This role supports ARS’ mission to develop solutions to agricultural challenges, focusing on disease prevention for aquaculture.
Research ProjectUtilize state‑of‑the‑art genomic editing and bioinformatics to identify genetic diversity in key aquaculture bacterial pathogens. Under mentor guidance, combine in‑vitro molecular biology with animal model research to evaluate functional significance of discovered diversity, contributing to vaccine development, rapid detection tests, and disease‑resistant fish diets.
Learning Objectives- Acquire practical experience in microbiology, molecular biology, and bioinformatics.
- Enhance computational skills through sequence analysis and primer design.
- Develop proficiency in PCR, real‑time or droplet digital PCR, DNA sequencing, and genetic manipulation of bacteria.
- Conduct disease research on important aquaculture-raised fish species.
- Improve oral and written communication skills, emphasizing scientific concepts and findings.

Appointment Details- Start Date:
August 2026 (flexible) - Length:
One year, renewable based on funding and performance. - Participation Level: Full time.
- Stipend: $60,000 – $78,000 annually.
- U.S. citizen only.
- Doctoral degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, or related Biological Sciences.
- Disciplines:
Environmental and Marine Sciences (Fisheries), Life Health and Medical Sciences.
Candidate must hold or be pursuing a doctoral degree in a relevant field.
Preferred Skills- Knowledge in microbiology, molecular biology, and bioinformatics.
- Functional knowledge of PCR, primer/probe design, real‑time or droplet digital PCR, DNA sequencing, genetic manipulation of bacteria.
- Experience in experimental design, execution, and result interpretation.
- Excellent organizational and multitasking skills; ability to collaborate within a team.
- Proficiency in technical writing, oral communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated flexibility and self‑motivation.
