REPORTS TO
Transportation Supervisor
JOB GOALTo provide support to drivers so that they can safely operate school system vehicles and to transport students, employees and designated persons for the effective operation of school system programs and activities.
QUALIFICATIONS- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid Alabama CDL and school bus driver’s license required
- Must meet all local, state, and federal licensing requirements and regulations required to operate a school bus and automobile
- Must pass and is subject to drug tests as required by federal and state law and the Board's policies regarding drug testing, operating system-owned vehicles, transporting students and all applicable policies
- Must have an acceptable motor vehicle record
- Must meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama statutes and state Board of Education regulations
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to operate a school vehicle safely over an assigned route according to a definite time schedule, which may require driving during pre-dawn and dusk periods
- Ability to operate a school vehicle in compliance with all traffic and safety laws and regulations, including defensive driving habits and posted speed limits
- Physical dexterity, coordination, mobility, and visual acuity to safely operate a school bus or other system-owned vehicle
- Adheres to all traffic laws
- Performs required pre‑trip inspections according to state‑mandated guidelines
- Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses
- Maintains discipline when students are on the bus
- Reports students with discipline problems to the proper authority
- Transports students to and from school
- Transports students on field trips, outings, athletic events, and other extracurricular or co‑curricular events, often in the evening and at night as assigned
- Prepares for and assists students in evacuating the bus and to transport safety/first‑aid equipment to care for injuries
- Maintains safety precautions when students are boarding and departing buses
- Reports all accidents immediately to the transportation office and other appropriate officials
- Attends periodic safety meetings and training
- Accurately keeps and submits monthly route reports and daily pre‑trip inspection reports
- Keeps the bus clean and orderly daily
- Identifies needs and arranges for necessary repairs and maintenance work
- Regulates heating, cooling and ventilation equipment on the bus for the comfort and safety of the passengers
- Keeps to the assigned schedule and discharges students only at authorized stops
- Notifies the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness
- Exercises responsible leadership when on out‑of‑town school trips
- Transports only authorized persons
- Maintains and uses communications or video surveillance equipment on buses according to school system policies and regulations
- Maintains cooperative and appropriate relationships with students, parents, community members and other employees
- Adheres to school system rules and regulations regarding bus pick up, return, storage and use during non‑route times
- Enforces regulations against smoking and eating on the bus
- Notifies immediate supervisor of absences
- Performs job‑related duties as assigned by supervisor
Medium Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force as needed to move objects.
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
