Placer County is currently accepting applications for Junior Engineer and Assistant Engineer in the Department of Public Works.
Two recruitment campaigns, one for each level:

Engineering Division: Responsible for the design and construction of capital improvement projects on the western slope of Placer County. Projects include bridge replacements, roadway widening, bike facilities, pedestrian walkways, etc. Ideal candidates will possess excellent attention to detail and an interest in roadway design and construction.
Transportation Planning Division: Responsible for long-range transportation planning, traffic safety, transportation funding and fee programs, and regional coordination. Also reviews land development projects for consistency with transportation goals and CEQA compliance. Ideal candidates will possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and be motivated to improve Placer County communities.
Continuous recruitment will remain open for the calendar year or until the final filing date, whichever occurs first. The eligible list established will expire by the end of the calendar year. Applicants may reapply and take an examination if a new recruitment opens the following year. The eligible list may be used to fill future vacancies in the Department of Public Works, Community Development Resource Agency, and Western Placer Waste Management Authority, subject to position-specific requirements.

Job DefinitionTo perform professional and technical engineering work in the office and field related to public works/civil engineering projects and programs of the Public Works Department.
Distinguishing CharacteristicsEntry-level class in the Engineer series. Employees perform routine tasks under immediate supervision while learning job tasks. Limited or no professional experience required. No Professional Engineer registration required.
SupervisionReceives general supervision from an Associate Civil Engineer and may receive technical and functional supervision from an Assistant Engineer.
Essential DutiesDesign and prepare plans and specifications for public works projects such as roads, storm drains, utility lines, and landfills. Develop revised design and construction standards. Perform calculations and prepare cost estimates.
Administer design and construction contracts; coordinate and review outside consultants; review payments and billing; negotiate prices and schedules; serve as resident engineer on construction projects.
Participate in plan check, review, processing, and permitting of private development plans affecting county roads, drains, and facilities; ensure compliance with codes, ordinances, rules, and regulations.
Participate in environmental review of proposed land developments; represent the Department at public hearings and meetings; set conditions of approval.
Review land development impact on county transportation system; identify roadway needs; gather and analyze traffic data; evaluate funding mechanisms; develop traffic impact fee systems.
Provide traffic engineering services including signage and striping needs, accident investigation, and maintenance of road and accident record systems.
Collect survey and mapping data.
Oversee county landfill and other solid waste facilities; review operators’ contract compliance; administer consultant contracts; authorize progress payments; submit regulatory reports; recommend operational changes.
Coordinate benefits assessment districts; develop and monitor project financing; administer consultant contracts and vendor contracts; prepare quarterly budgets.
