Under the supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor and functional direction of a Caltrans Highway Maintenance Lead worker, the incumbent is responsible for performing miscellaneous labor work and light equipment operation in connection with the maintenance of state highways and facilities. The incumbent may be required to work for other Supervisors or work units as workload requires and will receive training from other crew members.
Highway Maintenance – Operates light maintenance and construction equipment requiring a Class C California Driver’s License, removes litter and dead animals, installs lane closures and other traffic controls, flags traffic, cleans and repairs drains, repairs and replaces signs and other traffic safety devices, removes brush and trees, cleans and services equipment, loads and unloads material from trucks, cleans and paints maintenance facilities, hand patches, removes weeds both manually and mechanically, and performs other required work.
May be assigned duties normally assigned to the class of Caltrans Landscape Maintenance Worker and may receive training in heavy equipment operation.
Snow Removal – Performs chain control and truck screen duties, assists in road closures including directing traffic and properly placing warning and detour signs, removes snow from signs and other traffic safety devices, repairs and replaces snow poles, and repairs and builds tire chains. Operates snow removal equipment requiring a Class C California Driver’s License. May be assigned responsibility for placing or removing chain controls and determining need for abrasives and anti‑deicers.
A drug test and physical examination is required.
Eligibility may be determined by the applicant’s score on the Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker exam. Applicants who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotion) and/or who are new to state civil services employment must be on the state examination list to be eligible. Special Requirements- Valid California Driver’s License (CDL) – Provide CDL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements or restrictions.
- Drug screening must be passed prior to hiring.
- Valid and unrestricted Class C Driver’s License.
Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. If eligibility is based on education, applicants must provide unofficial transcripts or diplomas for verification. Unofficial, original, or official sealed transcripts are accepted and may be required upon appointment. Applicants with foreign transcripts or degrees must provide a U.S. equivalency report demonstrating the number of units and degree equivalence.
