Job Description

QUALIFICATIONS: Education Technician III Certification, working knowledge of libraries, familiarity with children’s and/or young adult literature, ability to work with students, proficient written and oral communication skills, ability to work with library computers/technology, ability to work both independently and as a team member.

SUPERVISES: Student workers and volunteers

JOB GOAL: Maintains a high quality library program and services that are centered on student and staff needs and the instructional goals of the school.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Supervises the library. Monitors and maintains appropriate student behavior at all times.
  • Meets with classes for book selection, story times. Provides instruction and develops library lessons based on library curriculum focusing on using the library, literature appreciation, information literacy skills (research) and digital citizenship in consultation with the K-8 library team leader.
  • Collaborate with teachers and the K-8 library team leader to integrate information literacy and research skills into classroom curriculum.
  • Provides equitable access to ideas and information in a variety of formats.
  • Circulation responsibilities including check-in, check-out, shelving, inventory control, interlibrary loans, holds, billing, reports, and overdues.
  • Collection development responsibilities including selecting, ordering and weeding library materials in consultation with the K-8 library team leader.
  • Provides specific collections of resources to enhance classroom curriculum for students and teachers to use in the library and/or in the classroom.
  • Technical services responsibilities including processing new/donated library materials, data entry, book repair etc.
  • Manages the library budget for books and library supplies.
  • Assists students and teachers in locating library materials and with various information needs.
  • Creates displays, bulletin boards, specialized bibliographies and other library promotional materials.
  • Maintains the library to keep it clean, pleasant and well-organized.
  • Maintains contact with administration and teachers to evaluate library programming and materials.
  • Maintains confidentiality concerning students and staff.
  • Utilizes appropriate technology to enhance the library collection and its services.
  • Keeps abreast of current literature and makes purchasing decisions by reading review journals and other selection resources. Refers to the school department policy for selection of educational materials when making purchasing decisions as needed.
  • Knowledgeable about school department policies regarding libraries and library services (selection of educational materials policy, citizens challenge of educational materials policy etc.).
  • Networks with other professionals through participation in local conferences as well as state and national conferences.
  • Participates in other continuing education opportunities.
  • Practices safe working conditions, assists in keeping work areas/equipment safe and promptly notifies the building principal of unsafe conditions.
  • Meets regularly with the K-8 library team leader for planning, direction and support.
  • Other duties as assigned by the building principal or K-8 library team leader.
