Job DescriptionSummary of Work:
This is a professional, full‑time, salaried teaching position. State of Maine Department of Education certification is required (adult education or high school); background check is also required. Day and evening hours required. Responsibilities include comprehensive instructional services aligned to content standards in reading, writing and speaking English to English language learners, along with teaching adult basic skills in the content areas of English, math and HiSET prep to learners with less than a 9th grade proficiency.
Additionally, this position may teach workplace literacy programs, adult diploma classes, College and Career Access programming, employability skills, and/or assist with corrections programming at the Androscoggin County Jail.
- Plans and executes lesson plans: demonstrates the ability to teach multiple subjects and multiple levels; willing to adapt teaching responsibilities based on student and program needs
- Differentiates and contextualizes instruction to meet individual student needs
- Understands learners’ goals and tailors learning opportunities to individual learning plans
- Establishes a safe, organized, and welcoming learning environment
- Provides on‑going formative assessments to track learner progress and summative assessments in accordance with state DOE requirements
- Conferences with learners regularly
Enrollment and Outreach (20%)
- Responds to student inquiries about classes
- Enrolls students in classes after completing the State intake form and assessment
- Accurately maintains students’ files and records
- Tracks student attendance and waitlist
- Completes reports as requested
- Attends staff meetings and professional development workshops
- State of Maine Department of Education certification required (adult education or high school)
- DOE Criminal History Record Check (CHRC) background check
- Establishes relationships with adult learners
- Communicates clearly and effectively (orally and in writing) with students and staff
- Collaborates with program staff and works well with a team to meet state benchmarks and grant funding requirements
- Knowledgeable about adult learning theory and practice
- Strong knowledge of teaching English to non‑native English speakers
- Prior experience teaching ESOL
- Demonstrated proficiency with technology
- Well organized
- Able to work independently
- Able to work with local employers to contextualize instruction and assessment
- Experience with distance learning preferred
- Ability to work days and evenings as scheduled
- Willing to be a traveling teacher
Term of Employment: 260 days/yr
