Diesel Mechanic, Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Position Summary
At Republic Services, Technicians maintain the performance and quality of our fleet, performing routine and preventive maintenance on diesel and non‑diesel equipment and trucks. The Technician Apprenticeship program trains an entry‑level technician over a two‑year period covering the following technical skills:
- Electrical diagnosis of starting & charging systems
- Air conditioning & heating component identification & inspection
- Wheel end assembly component identification & inspection
- Air system component identification & inspection
- Air brakes component identification & inspection
- Hydraulics component identification and inspection
- Truck preventative maintenance
Apprenticeships are available across the United States in one of our 180 business units.
Program OverviewTraining begins with nine weeks of company‑paid classroom instruction at the Republic Services Technical Institute in Dallas, Texas, followed by 22 months of on‑the‑job training (OJT) with mentorship and virtual instruction. Participants work toward certification as an entry‑level Diesel Mechanic. Highly accelerated apprentices who meet milestones may advance to Level C Technician earlier.
An additional benefit of the program is tuition‑free certification and leadership development to prepare for long‑term career growth.
ResponsibilitiesApprentices will perform the following duties under supervision:
- Routine preventive maintenance: basic tire work, wheel end work, general mechanic tasks.
- Electrical, hydraulic, and brake system diagnostics and repairs.
- Assist in troubleshooting and repairing engine, transmission, and auxiliary systems.
- Support fleet maintenance plans and document all work accurately.
- Logical problem‑solver with enthusiasm for vehicle engineering.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Willingness to uphold Republic Services values and expectations on safety, ethics, and respect.
- Commitment to completing a two‑year training program.
- Willingness to travel to Dallas, Texas for the initial 9‑week in‑person training.
Training starts August 10, 2026. The apprenticeship includes hourly wages: $16.00 during the training period, $25.45 after graduation, and incremental increases for hours completed and promotion to Tech
C.
