Physical Therapist Assistant
The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) is primarily responsible for the delivery of Physical Therapy care to the patient population to which she/he is assigned and the recording of that care in the hospital medical record. The PTA acts as a consultant to various patient populations and must work under the direction and supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist according to the laws and practice regulations of the State of Virginia.
The PTA provides instruction to OT/PT support staff, PT students, personnel of other disciplines within VCUHS, and patient and/or family members. The PTA may rotate through our various clinical service areas.
Key Responsibilities- Patient implementation of plan of care and discharge planning.
- Ordering equipment.
- Representing the department at rounds and discharge conferences.
- Scheduling and charging patients.
- Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable): supervising Rehab Technicians, students, and volunteers.
- Member of a self‑directed team, applying knowledge and experience in daily clinic problem solving, and bringing unresolved issues to the departmental manager for assistance.
- Expected to share in weekend and holiday schedule expectations or have a fluctuation of daily work hours from 8 AM to 7 PM based on patient population/clinic needs.
- Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
Licensed (or licensure eligible) by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Physical Therapist Assistant. - Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:
Current license by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Physical Therapist Assistant. - Current CPR Certification if required by clinic or practice area.
- Experience:
New graduate from an accredited Physical Therapist Assistant Program. - Preferred experience:
One (1) year of work experience as a Physical Therapist Assistant. - Education/Training:
Graduate of an accredited Physical Therapist Assistant Program (Associate’s Degree). No preferred alternative.

Lifting 50‑100 lbs.; frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing (steps, ladder, other), reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive). - Mental/Sensory:
Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speak clearly, write legibly, reading, logical thinking. - Emotional:
Fast‑pace environment, steady pace, able to handle multiple priorities, frequent and intense customer interactions, noisy environment, able to adapt to frequent change.
