NURSE - 187 CONTRACT DAYS
QUALIFICATIONS:
(1) Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
(2) Must hold valid Alabama Nursing License or a Multistate License (MSL) issued through the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC).
(3) Maintain a current CPR/BLS certification.
(4) Must possess a valid Alabama Driver's License.
(5) Must meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama Statutes and State Board of Education regulations.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
The School Nurse (RN/LPN) supports student health, safety, and academic achievement by providing professional nursing services in accordance with Alabama Board of Nursing standards and district policies. Duties include performing nursing assessments appropriate to licensure- RNs completing comprehensive assessments and developing Individualized Healthcare Plans and Emergency Action Plans, and LPNs conducting focused assessments and implementing established plans under RN supervision. The nurse administers medications and treatments safely;
RNs also delegate medication administration to trained unlicensed personnel and supervise Medication Assistants, while LPNs administer medications within their scope and under required RN oversight. Additional responsibilities include responding to student illnesses, injuries, and emergencies; reviewing immunization records; assisting with school health screenings; maintaining accurate electronic health records; and communicating effectively with students, families, staff, and healthcare providers. This role requires strong clinical judgement, adherence to confidentiality standards, and proficiency with school health documentation systems, and ability to follow medical orders and build professional relationships with appropriate providers.
Skills in oral and written communication. Ability to operate a computer and utilize software applications related to assignment.

JOB GOAL
To meet the healthcare needs and maintain medical records of students in Auburn City Schools.
SUPERVISES:
N/A
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
* (1) The RN will attend and help to present "Curriculum To Teach Unlicensed School Personnel" - Medication Delegation in the school setting.
* (2) Monitor the dispensing of medications at the assigned school and maintain accurate records and documentation including:
Correct storage of medications
Charting of medication administration
Confidential records of dispensed medications
Training of student/staff on specific needs of students
Verifying completeness of all Prescriber/Parent (PPA) Forms
Implementation of emergency plans in the event emergency medication is administered and all required follow-up documentation
Weekly controlled medication count
* (3) Ensuring all unusual occurrence reports, Epi-Seizure-Diabetes emergency forms and injury reports are properly submitted and filed according to Auburn City Schools' policy and the State of Alabama
* (4) Assist with Vision and Scoliosis Screenings, including communication with parents and complete all documentation and required state reports.
* (5) Maintain current and compliant immunization records on all students at assigned schools. Also ensuring that students are properly assigned in ImmPRINT.
* (6) Meet daily medical needs of students.
* (7) Maintain current records of all health concerns and visits to the health office.
* (8) RN to write current Individualized Health Plans (IHP) for students with chronic illnesses to include:
Meet with parent(s)/guardian(s) about IHP and obtain signature(s)
Collaborate with License Practical Nurse to ensure all care plans are implemented
Develop a plan for emergencies, extracurricular activities, transportation, and after-school needs, etc.
Obtain read receipts from all "need-to-know" staff
* (9) Assist counselors, as requested, with 5th grade Human Growth and Development classes.
* (10) Perform head lice checks as needed and communicate with parents about treatment and prevention and Auburn City Schools policy.
* (11) Present in-service training as requested.
* (12) Attend Auburn City Schools' Nurses Meetings.
* (13) Keep nursing license and CPR/BLS certification current. A copy of both must be kept in the Health Services Administration office and in the nurse's office.
* (14) Act in a professional and ethical manner and always adhere to professional standards.
* (15) Demonstrate attention to punctuality, records and reports.
* (16) Comply with policies, procedures and programs of the Auburn City School System.
* (17) Exercise appropriate professional judgment.
* (18) Demonstrate support for the school system and its goals and priorities.
* (19) Respond to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner.
* (20) Keep supervisor and/or principal informed of potential problems, unusual events or injuries.
* (21) Exhibit interpersonal skills to work as an effective team member.
* (22) Perform all tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position.
