Job Summary

The Department of AI & Health seeks a Data Scientist 1 to join our growing research unit. The role will advance computational capabilities through projects in medical imaging, electronic health records, genomics, and real‑time patient monitoring. Contributions will support grant acquisition, publication output, student recruitment, postdoctoral training, and partnerships with clinical departments and external collaborators.

Responsibilities

Application Development and Maintenance

  • Design and implement predictive models using AI/ML on structured and unstructured data (e.g., admissions, EHRs, radiology reports).
  • Work at the intersection of longitudinal ML, multi‑modal analysis, clinical informatics, and population health.
  • Conduct data preprocessing, feature engineering, and model validation.
  • Evaluate model fairness, bias, and explainability.
  • Translate insights into operational recommendations through dashboards, briefings, and stakeholder presentations.
  • Support strategic initiatives such as student success analytics, department crowding models, and early detection algorithms.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Collaborate with clinicians, educators, and administrators to frame problems, understand data needs, and interpret model outputs.
  • Translate insights into operational recommendations through dashboards, briefings, and stakeholder presentations.
Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Biomedical Informatics, Statistics, Engineering, or a related field and one year of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior involvement in healthcare, academic operations, or public sector analytics; familiarity with EHR systems (Epic, Encompass) or academic admissions systems (AMCAS).

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Experience with machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), or AI model development; proficiency in Python, R, and data manipulation libraries (pandas, scikit‑learn, Tensor Flow/PyTorch); excellent communication skills and ability to translate complex technical findings for non‑technical stakeholders.

Experience Working With Clinical, Academic, Or Institutional Datasets Preferred.

Shift / Salary / Benefits

Shift: Days/M-F (additional hours outside normal business hours may be required).

Pay Band: B9 – Salary Range: $48,800 to $50,000 annually (commensurate with qualifications within the established range).

Recruitment Period: 11/21/25 – Until Filled.

Benefits include health, dental, and life insurance;
Teachers Retirement System or Optional Retirement Plan; earned vacation and sick leave; 13 paid holidays;
Tuition Assistance for full‑time employees after six months. Full‑time employees may also elect additional benefits.

All candidates must successfully pass a background check before starting. Depending on duties, a credit check for positions of trust or purchase card usage may be required, and motor vehicle reports may be needed for driving responsibilities. Faculty hires must provide proof of academic degrees and transcripts; foreign‑educated candidates must submit credential evaluations.
