LOCATION: T.O. Vinson / North Health Centers

Under general supervision, the Hygienist cleans teeth, examines head, neck, and oral areas for signs of oral disease, takes x‑rays, applies fluoride, varnish or sealants, and performs screenings and fluoride treatments. The Hygienist also removes calcareous deposits, accretions, and stains from teeth and below gum margins using dental instruments.

  • Clean teeth and examine for abnormalities in face, mouth, and neck; take x‑rays.
  • Apply fluoride and other cavity‑preventing agents (varnish, sealants) to arrest dental decay.
  • Inspect gums with probes to locate sores, periodontal recessed gums, and signs of gum disease.
  • Check lymph nodes under clients’ chins to detect swelling or tenderness that may indicate oral cancer.
  • Provide oral hygiene instruction, explain procedures, and assist patients (and parents) with paperwork.
  • Call schools, head‑start programs, YMCA, and other agencies to set up events and coordinate the annual Dental Quiz Bowl.
  • Prepare supplies and complete event paperwork, entering data into the appropriate database.
  • Provide dental school screening services and clinical services to improve and maintain oral health.
  • Create PowerPoint presentations and provide education at health fairs, school career days, Red Ribbon events, and parent‑teacher meetings.
  • Assist the dentist with x‑rays and examinations.
  • Clean operatories and follow sterilization procedures, including instrument sterilization, running the sterilizer, and emptying it when complete.
  • Clean trays, set up trays for the next patient, and keep the operatory stocked with supplies.
  • Inform staff when supplies are low and contact local extended living centers to offer services to residents.
  • Visit all DCBOH dental clinics regularly to monitor infection control and update forms necessary for procedures.
  • Chart conditions of decay and disease for diagnosis and treatment by the dentist.
  • Provide front‑desk assistance when needed.
  • Complete continuing education classes, both virtually and face‑to‑face.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s degree in dental hygiene from an accredited college or university.
  • Current Georgia dental hygienist license.
  • Two years of related experience.
  • OR one year at the lower level Dental Hygienist 2 (HCT
    011) or a position equivalent.
