The Middle School Social Studies Teacher & Advisor is a dedicated and passionate educator who fosters academic excellence and supports the social and emotional growth of students within a collaborative and engaging learning environment. This educator will bring energy and enthusiasm for civics, geography, economics, and cultural studies, preparing students for informed and engaged citizenship while developing critical thinking skills.
The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in geographic literacy, civic engagement, economic principles, and global studies, the ability to create an engaging and dynamic classroom environment, and the skills to guide students in developing resilience, confidence, and a growth mindset. This position involves teaching middle school social studies courses and serving as an advisor to a small group of students, implementing Developmental Designs for Middle School to support students’ academic, social, and emotional development.
This is a full-time, ten-month faculty position reporting to the Middle School Division Head.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES- Plan and implement engaging social studies lessons that develop students’ skills in geography, civic literacy, global awareness, and economic understanding.
- Teach students about government, political systems, rights, and responsibilities of citizenship, fostering civic engagement.
- Guide students in understanding economic principles, including personal finance, trade, and resource distribution.
- Explore world cultures and geography, helping students understand global interdependence and cultural diversity.
- Develop students’ ability to analyze current events, form opinions, and engage in respectful debate.
- Foster an appreciation for different perspectives, societal structures, and global issues, promoting empathy and cultural competence.
- Apply effective classroom management strategies, utilizing Developmental Designs for Middle School to create a respectful, collaborative environment that fosters personal responsibility and social‑emotional learning.
- Serve as an advisor to a small group of students, fostering their growth toward responsible independence and providing social‑emotional support through the Developmental Designs framework.
- Collaborate with colleagues to enhance the middle school experience and provide a cohesive support network for each student.
- Communicate proactively and positively with parents to keep them informed about student progress and classroom experiences.
- Attend and participate in grade‑level overnight and day field trips that enhance students’ learning experiences and support their social‑emotional growth.
- Support school‑wide events and activities that contribute to a positive school culture and fulfill all professional responsibilities, including supervision and reporting.
- Engage in ongoing professional development and reflection to ensure continuous growth as an educator.
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Studies, Political Science, Geography, or a related field (minimum).
- Experience teaching middle school social studies in a structured academic setting.
- Strong knowledge of civics, economics, geography, and cultural studies at the middle school level.
- Ability to teach research and analytical writing effectively, using clear expectations and structured feedback.
- Genuine interest in and understanding of middle school students, their developmental needs, and respectful classroom management techniques.
- Proficiency in differentiated instruction to support diverse learning needs.
- Strong communication skills for effectively engaging with students, families, and colleagues.
- Commitment to continuous professional learning and implementation of best teaching practices in social studies education.
- Ability to approach varied responsibilities with enthusiasm, creativity, integrity, flexibility, and humor.
- Openness to collaboration with colleagues across grade levels.
- Technologically literate, with the ability to integrate digital tools into social studies instruction and global research.
