The Boardman Chair of Science and Sustainability is a faculty leader who advances science and experiential education across divisions while teaching and advising in the Middle School. This position is instrumental in guiding the vision for experiential learning at Episcopal Day School, with a special emphasis on our expansive 48‑acre Flowing Wells Campus, including an 18‑acre forest and wetland habitat that serves as a living classroom where students can explore, wonder, study, and connect with the natural world.
The ideal candidate will bring energy, enthusiasm, and a collaborative spirit to both classroom teaching and program development. The Boardman Chair advances experiential education and environmental stewardship through inquiry‑based instruction, faculty collaboration, and the creation of learning opportunities that connect students to real‑world experiences and discoveries.
This is a full‑time, ten‑month faculty position with two additional weeks of administrative work in the summer. The position reports jointly to the Head of Lower and Preschool and the Head of Middle School and serves on the Administrative Team.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Science Curriculum Leadership- Chair the Science Leadership Team, with representatives from each division.
- Oversee the PreK–8 science curriculum, ensuring alignment, continuity, and rigor across grade levels with an emphasis on 3rd‑8th grade.
- Make recommendations for curriculum updates, program improvements, and instructional resources in collaboration with Division Heads, who hold final approval for curricular decisions.
- Participate in hiring processes for science faculty as appropriate.
- Support science teachers in implementing best practices in inquiry‑based and experiential science instruction.
- Order and maintain consumables and supplies to support science and sustainability programs.
- Foster engagement, collaboration, and professional growth across the science faculty.
- Oversee the development and implementation of the Middle School Environmental Studies program, including longitudinal studies, data collection, and analysis.
- Work with and serve as a resource for Walton Way and Flowing Wells Campus faculty as they plan lessons, integrate hands‑on investigations, and connect classroom learning to real‑world contexts.
- Support the ongoing growth of Farmpreneurship initiatives, including beekeeping, hydroponics, and chicken care, ensuring systems are in place for ongoing maintenance, including during holidays and summer months.
- Arrange professional development for faculty in experiential, nature‑based, and sustainability‑focused teaching practices.
- Teach four sections of Middle School science, emphasizing inquiry, discovery, and student engagement.
- Serve as an advisor to a small group of Middle School students, supporting their academic, social, and emotional development.
- Collaborate closely with Division Heads to ensure science and sustainability initiatives are mission‑aligned and developmentally appropriate.
- Communicate regularly with Division Heads regarding progress, needs, and opportunities within the science program.
- Propose curricular or programmatic changes through a formal recommendation process, ensuring coordination and approval from Division Heads before implementation.
- Support alignment of goals, priorities, and schedules between Walton Way and Flowing Wells Campus learning experiences.
- Bachelor’s degree in education or science (required); advanced degree preferred.
- Teaching experience in middle school science with strong content knowledge.
- Experience with faculty collaboration or program development in science or experiential education.
- Genuine understanding of middle grades child development and the ability to use student‑centered, respectful teaching practices.
- Approach responsibilities with enthusiasm, creativity, integrity, flexibility, and humor.
- Proficiency with inquiry‑based and differentiated instruction.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills for working with students, families, and colleagues.
- Comfort with technology as a teaching and program‑support tool.
