Job Summary

The Instructional Designer () will guide and support the development of innovative online programs and courses through direct consultation with individual faculty and faculty groups regarding online course design, delivery, and quality assurance. The  work within AU Online and collaborate with IT, faculty, staff, and administrators to design, develop, and deliver high‑quality asynchronous online courses and programs that integrate active learning activities, technology tools, and assessments to enhance student learning and meet instructional quality and student experience standards.

The successful candidate will be highly knowledgeable in instructional design, a creative problem solver, and a positive supporter of AU Online’s mission.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with colleagues and faculty to design and develop effective asynchronous online learning.
  • Employ industry‑standard practices, learning theory, and design principles to create high‑quality learning experiences.
  • Assist faculty in selecting educational technologies that support their course outcomes.
  • Support the development of multimedia integrated into courses.
  • Project‑manage multiple online asynchronous courses during each development cycle.
  • Create valid assessments for formative and summative evaluation of student learning.
  • Source and create dynamic content to maintain learner engagement.
  • Collaborate with faculty to review and update existing courses for contemporary relevance.
  • Make recommendations for learning experience improvements using performance data and feedback.
  • Work closely with the IDEA team, website, and handouts for all training delivery channels.
  • Support quality assurance processes: apply rubrics, consult on accessibility, copyright, and regulatory compliance.
  • Develop faculty training materials and experiences that focus on engaging and interactive online courses.
  • Consult with faculty on the incorporation of software and educational technology.
  • Continually update skills and knowledge related to instructional design, new models of online instruction, and emerging technologies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in instructional design, educational technology, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • OR Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of two years of experience working with a learning management system.
Required Experience
  • Designing learning experiences, facilitating training, and delivering presentations to adult learners.
  • Experience in a higher education setting.
  • Experience with online course development and integration of educational technology.
  • Experience with audio and video production.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Several years of experience as a contributing team member.
  • Experience designing asynchronous and synchronous online instruction in higher education.
  • Successful online and/or hybrid teaching experience.
  • Experience implementing rubrics and standards for quality assurance.
  • Demonstrated success in improving teaching and learning with faculty.
  • Experience developing and facilitating professional development for faculty.
  • Experience with learning analytics.
  • Presentation or publication in peer‑reviewed contexts.
Pedagogy & Technical Skills
  • Apply instructional design principles to projects.
  • Apply quality rubrics to improve course design.
