Second Baptist School is currently seeking a full-time LOWER SCHOOL READING SPECIALIST for the  school year.

  • Position Title: Lower School Reading Specialist
  • Reports To: Head of Lower School in collaboration with Student Support Services
  • Grades Served: PK3 - 4th (primary), with support for grades 5-6 as needed
  • Work Calendar: Ten Months (with potential summer support as needed)

JOB SUMMARY.

The Lower School Reading Specialist supports Second Baptist School’s mission by providing targeted, research-based literacy intervention to students who demonstrate decoding, comprehension or language-based learning needs. This role partners closely with classroom teachers and Student Support Services to deliver structured literacy instruction aligned with core classroom content, ensuring students are supported without missing essential instruction.

The Reading Specialist uses data-driven practices to screen, assess, intervene and monitor progress, helping students build foundational reading skills while fostering confidence and independence as learners.

RESPONSIBILITIES and DUTIES.

Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following:

Assessment & Progress Monitoring

  • Screen, assess and monitor student progress using tools such as DIBELS, ERB and Maze.
  • Maintain accurate documentation to guide instructional decisions and track growth.
  • Use data to determine entry into and exit from intervention services.

Literacy Intervention

  • Deliver structured, evidence-based literacy instruction using approaches such as Neuhaus or Orton-Gillingham.
  • Address phonics, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and written language skills.
  • Provide individualized or small-group instruction based on student need.

Integration with Classroom Instruction

  • Coordinate intervention scheduling within the reading block to reinforce core classroom instruction and minimize missed learning.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to align reading, writing and spelling instruction.
  • Support continuity through co-planning, flexible scheduling and scaffolded re-teaching.
  • Partner closely with classroom teachers, Student Support Services and administrators.
  • Communicate clearly with parents regarding intervention goals, progress and next steps.
  • Participate in team meetings to review student progress and plan support.

Professional & Program Support

  • Stay current with best practices in structured literacy and reading intervention.
  • Support early identification and prevention efforts, particularly in PK–1.
  • Uphold the mission, values and Christ-centered culture of Second Baptist School.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of Lower School or designated administrator.

CANDIDATE SUMMARY.

We seek the following in qualified candidates:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Reading, Literacy, or a related field; advanced training or certification in reading intervention or literacy preferred.
  • Experience with structured literacy approaches (Neuhaus, Orton-Gillingham or similar).
  • Strong understanding of literacy development and evidence-based reading instruction.
  • Strong assessment, data analysis and progress-monitoring skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students of varied learning profiles and needs.
  • A strong Christian testimony and a calling to serve as a positive Christian role model to our students.
  • A heart to provide exceptional customer service to all members of the community.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • A dedicated and loyal team member supporting all school activities and school-wide initiatives.
  • Flexibility to support needs as they arise within the division.
  • Proficiency in technology and strong organizational and multi-tasking skills with working knowledge of Google Workspace (i.e. Google Docs, Google Sheets, etc.)
  • A responsible steward of the school’s resources and support of the school’s fundraising efforts as able.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Reading Specialist certification or equivalent training.
  • Experience working in an independent or Christian school setting.
  • Experience supporting students with dyslexia or other language-based learning differences.
  • Familiarity with common literacy assessments and intervention tools.

Prior knowledge of Second Baptist Church and School is considered a plus.
