Position: 4-H Environmental Educator – Camp Jekyll

4-H Environmental Educator – Camp Jekyll

Location:

Camp Jekyll (Jekyll Island, Georgia).

Employment type:

Temporary Service/Maintenance, FLSA Non-Exempt. FTE 1.00. Salary: commensurate with experience.

Start date:

08/24/2026.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Independently lead, teach, and manage K-12 grade students and chaperoned adults through multidisciplinary outdoor classes focusing on coastal ecology, life science, earth science, and marine science. (60% of time)
  • General support of overall center operations including maintenance of facilities, equipment, classrooms, teaching materials, and vehicles; operating a UGA vehicle; assisting dining hall support and other projects as needed. (25% of time)
  • Animal care, husbandry and maintenance for residential educational reptiles, amphibians, marine invertebrates, coastal fishes, and other living teaching animals. (10% of time)
  • Support staff responsibilities for reservations and guests. (5% of time)
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Education, Environmental Education, Forestry, Natural Resources, Outdoor Education, Science or related field.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification (or willingness to obtain).
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
  • Teaching qualities: commitment, passion for education, enthusiasm for life‑long learning, and building meaningful connections with students.
  • Work qualities: dynamic personality, strong communication, positive attitude, creativity, leadership, integrity, and readiness to grow.
  • Skill in teaching a wide variety of subjects to K-12 youth.
  • Skill in group management of adults and students.
  • Broad knowledge of outdoor education and willingness to expand content expertise.
  • Effective communication with youth and adults.
  • Customer service and hospitality/food industry experience.
  • Ability to work in a team and independently.
  • Adaptability and flexibility.
  • Experience caring for live teaching animals (reptiles, amphibians, etc.).
  • Ability to teach and work outdoors in variable weather conditions.
Physical Demands

Work in outdoor elements, including adverse weather; lift 20–40 pounds and walk approximately 3 miles daily.

Information and Policies

Driving is required. Background investigation required. Position of trust, control of financial resources, and interaction with children under 18.
