Swilley Library Public Services Student Assistant
Pay rate: $10.00 per hour
Scheduled hours: 20 per week
Start date:
01/12/2026 | End date: 05/03/2026
- Assist students and faculty with basic library tasks, including book searches and logging into library resources from off campus, as trained by the Public Services Librarian and Library Assistants.
- For in-depth assistance, direct library users to Research Services or other sources of library help as appropriate.
- Support technology and software by identifying available software on library computers and perform basic printer maintenance (paper jams, paper replenishment, toner installation).
- Handle circulation tasks, including book check-in and check-out, equipment check-in and check-out, and processing of courier packages.
- Answer library phones, direct calls, and take messages.
- Maintain library tidiness by pushing chairs in, cleaning whiteboards, and wiping down surfaces and equipment as needed.
- Maintain a presence in the library during shifts, observing for user needs and library operations, and ensuring compliance with library rules.
- Perform hourly patron counts.
- When rules are not followed, make patrons aware of the rules and refer further problems to the Public Services Librarian and Library Assistants.
- Keep book collection and other library materials orderly using the LC Classification system and the library catalog.
- Perform suitable special and general library projects as assigned by the Public Services Librarian and Library Assistants.
- Must be a Mercer student in good standing.
- Ability to work well with the public, complete tasks accurately, and exhibit excellent communication skills.
- Knowledge of computers and computer applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.) is essential.
- Previous library experience is ideal.
- Nights and weekend availability required.
