ExaminationThe examination will consist of an evaluation of education and experience, accomplished by analysis of the application. Successful candidates will provide an official, accredited college transcript for all degrees used to qualify for this position.
Purpose of ClassificationThe classification is for entry‑level professional librarian activities. Responsibilities include providing library services, cataloging materials, developing programs, and serving as a primary information source for patrons. Additional duties involve organizing and leading outreach services, planning and directing initiatives, and implementing presentations.
Essential Functions• Provides customer service to Library patrons and the public: offers assistance and information related to library programs, services, materials, facilities, equipment, fees, procedures, or other issues; responds to questions and complaints; researches problems and initiates resolution; greets visitors and directs them to library areas; assists patrons with library services, voter registration, and locating materials.
• Exercises discretion and limited authority regarding library programs, collections, and operations: designs or assists in design and delivery of programming; maintains program participation records; develops goals and objectives; recommends allocation of financial, staffing, equipment, space, and bibliographic resources; communicates goals, objectives, and policies to the public.
• Assists in the maintenance of an assigned library section or collection: selects and evaluates books, periodicals, and audio‑visual materials; processes orders, cancellations, and claims; catalogs materials as required.
• May lead staff as needed, coordinating and providing daily assistance to employees, volunteers, or community service workers: coordinates programs, consults with staff, and provides technical expertise.
• Participates in inventorying archives as required; assists in developing archival procedures and evaluating manuscripts and research materials.
• Serves as a general reference resource, providing assistance in locating research information.
• Provides assistance to users with special needs and organizes materials for special programs.
• Establishes and maintains relationships with community agencies and institutions: develops partnerships to enhance library system awareness and promotes services; serves as a community liaison for collection development.
• Instructs patrons in use of library systems/modules, including OPAC, self‑check machines, Internet, Dewey Decimal system, indices, databases, library computers, copiers, printers, and other equipment, and conducts formal classes as assigned.
• May monitor computer laboratory: enforces rules for computer/Internet use; performs basic maintenance and troubleshooting.
• Processes inter‑library loan requests: verifies availability, identifies owning library, sends requests, receives and processes material, and notifies patrons of availability.
• Performs all duties of subordinate Library personnel as needed: circulation services, repair of damaged materials, processing new/ donated items, reshelving, restocking supplies, and general operations.
