Job Summary

Augusta University's Department of English and World Languages invites applications for the faculty position of Lecturer of English. The selected candidate will be expected to teach introductory composition courses. This is a non-tenure eligible faculty position (9-month contract) with duties anticipated to begin in August 2027. Candidates should have a strong commitment to teaching first-year writing and general education classes. They should also have disciplinary background or professional experience in composition studies.

Responsibilities

Teach 8 courses per year as assigned by the department chair. These will include ENGL 1101 and 1102 (College Composition I and II) and other courses in writing, literature, and/or humanities as needed. The faculty member will also teach dual enrollment courses periodically.

Maintain regular office hours, advise students, grade, and follow university policies regarding teaching (e.g., reporting attendance and holding final exams during assigned times).

Create, update, and submit course syllabi/outlines to the department and university platforms, as required by university and system policies.

Participate in professional development opportunities as appropriate.

Participate in shared governance of the department, college, and university as assigned.

Required Qualifications

An MA in English, Professional Writing, Rhetoric and Composition, or related field or MA with a concentration in the teaching discipline (minimum of 18 graduate semester hours)

Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:

  • Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation
  • Evidence of ability as a teacher
  • Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned
  • Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements)
  • Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in English, Professional Writing, Rhetoric and Composition, or related field
  • Prior experience teaching composition at the university level
  • Experience teaching online at the university level
  • Demonstrated success teaching various student populations, including dual enrolled students
Shift/Salary/Benefits

This position is academic year based and typically works August through May, depending on dates outlined in offer letter and yearly contract.

The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0.

Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.
