The Division of Environmental Health & Safety ({EHS}) partners with Augusta University to promote safety services that support the clinical, teaching, and research missions on campus. We are responsible for a campus‑wide effort to ensure Augusta University complies with local, state, and federal health and safety rules and regulations to provide a safe environment for work, study, research, and patient care.

Job Summary

Hazardous Materials Officer plans and supervises staging, collection, management, and disposal of hazardous wastes and controlled substances; develops and provides chemical safety training to faculty, staff, and students; prepares reports; develops or revises chemical safety policies and procedures; provides training and technical guidance to Occupational Health and Safety Technicians; and responds to emergencies involving hazardous materials.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and supervise collection of chemical wastes from laboratories, clinics, shops, and maintenance facilities; supervise segregation and safe storage of hazardous wastes at Material Safety Storage Facility; coordinate with hazardous waste vendors for shipping and disposal; maintain hazardous waste management and all disposal documentation, including inventories, certificates of disposal and recycling, and waste manifests.
  • Develop, schedule, and present chemical safety training materials commensurate with needs of intended facility, staff, or students; maintain training documentation.
  • Prepare internal and external reports associated with chemical safety program, including reports to regulatory agencies; develop or revise chemical safety policies and procedures; provide technical guidance, consultation, and oversight to Occupational Health and Safety Technicians; coordinate initial laboratory opening visits, clearance and closure operations with Principal Investigators and laboratory staff; perform quarterly silver…
