JOB TITLE: School Float Nurse

CONTRACTED STATUS: 10 Months

REPORTS TO: Nurse Supervisor/School Principal

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Hold a current license issued by the Georgia State Board as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse, certification in CPR and first aid instruction.

Certification or Licensure: LPN or RN licensure

Skills: Serves as a school nurse with the ability to make health-related decisions, the ability to step into a school environment and function well within the school’s established rituals and routines, the ability to respond appropriately during a crisis, the ability to work well with students in PK-12 grades, the ability to educate other school staff on medical needs of students.

Work Experience: RCSS School Nurse for at least 2 years.

Primary Duty: Assists in meeting the health needs of students according to district policies and within the guidelines of the GA State Board of Nursing. The School Float Nurse receives direction and supervision from the School Nurse Supervisor to provide supportive services to all schools in the School System as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Substitutes for RCSS School Nurses in schools when absent or to fill a vacancy.
  • Assists where needed with the health care needs of students as they may arise.
  • Assist with training/teaching of staff concerning medical needs of students.
  • Participates in 504 meetings as needed.
  • Assists school nurses in conducting hearing and vision screenings and other medical screenings.
  • Administers medications and treatments to students as ordered by physicians.
  • Performs nursing assessments and tasks to address student health care needs.
  • Determines when to send a student home and notifies parent/guardian.
  • Maintains accurate and appropriate clinic records.
  • Initiates referrals to parents and school personnel.
  • Notifies teachers of any medical problems students may have.
  • Obtains, files and delivers to principal accident reports on students and employees.
  • Assists the school administrators and teachers in gaining insight into student health.
  • Reports contagious diseases to principal, School Nurse Supervisor, Director of Student Services (or designee) and to the Richmond County Health Department.
  • Screen and evaluates findings for scoliosis, blood pressure, head lice, and records and reports these findings to the appropriate personnel or department (Student Services Department, East Central Health Department).
  • Conducts vision, hearing and scoliosis screenings.
  • Identifies students with potential health problems.
  • Provides crisis intervention for student illness, injury and emotional disturbance.
  • Assists in the control of communicable diseases within the school environment.
  • Assists schools in maintaining adequate clinic supplies – first aid supplies and stock medication.
  • Initiates referrals to community health resources and serves as a liaison between home, school and community.
  • Assists schools in obtaining, maintaining, and in maintaining school agreements.
  • Uses the nursing process to assess student health needs and develop appropriate plans of care.
  • Reports student health care during bus transportation and reports concerns to parents, health services and school staff.
  • Maintains and updates medical skills through CPR certification.
  • Conducts ongoing health counseling with students, parents, school personnel and informs.
  • Assists the doctor in conducting physical examination for special education students to participate in Special Olympics when requested.
  • Serves as a resource person to school administrators or classroom teachers in health instruction.
  • Acts as a resource person in promoting health careers.

    The employee must occasionally lift and or move up to 25 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to walk, stand, and sit. Travel may be required for this position.
