Registered Nurse (RN) II OR Dept Premium Weekend Alternative Periop

At Houston Methodist, the RN II OR Dept Premium Weekend Alternative Periop position is a licensed staff nurse who functions at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner’s model of clinical practice. The RN II OR Dept Prem WA Peri position is responsible for providing professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducting nursing assessments, assisting with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintaining medical records.

The RN II OR Dept Prem WA Peri position provides direct patient care effectively and efficiently, including care for patients with varied and complex needs. The RN II OR Dept Prem WA Peri position communicates and collaborates with physicians and the interprofessional health care team to facilitate and coordinate compassionate, efficient, quality care and achieve desired treatment outcomes. The RN II OR Dept Prem WA Peri position demonstrates clinical competence when providing care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures, and managing emergencies, while acting as a patient and family advocate to monitor and maintain patient rights.

The RN II OR Dept Prem WA Peri position assumes leadership roles with progressive responsibility, including but not limited to participating in or leading unit and shared governance initiatives, serving as charge nurse or preceptor to students or new employees, and possibly contributing to service line or hospital-wide initiatives in partnership with management.

To be eligible for the Weekend Alternative differential, 24 hours must be worked between Friday at 6:45 a.m. through Monday at 7:15 a.m.

Qualifications Education
  • Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) indicated below in the Certifications, Licenses and Registrations section.
Experience
  • Twelve months registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment.
Licenses and Certifications (Required)
  • RN – Registered Nurse – Texas State Licensure – Texas Board of Nursing; must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing Texas residency.
  • BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association.
Licenses and Certifications (Preferred)
  • Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification.
Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, as defined in orientation and annual departmental competency checklists.
  • Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform essential functions of this job, especially regarding patient or employee safety.
  • Effectively communicates with patients, physicians, family members, and co‑workers in a customer service focus and positive language style.
  • Strong assessment, organizational, and problem‑solving skills with capacity to prioritize multiple tasks and role components.
  • Functions independently and exercises judgment in interactions with physicians, interprofessional care team, patients, and families.
  • Uses critical thinking skills and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Demonstrates proficient time‑management skills.
  • Maintains professional contributions as defined in the Clinical Career Path program guide.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft products including Outlook.
