Department Information

The Medical College of Georgia Department of Physiology focuses on the framework of the body's cells, organs and systems, how they work, and how abnormal function leads to disease. The department is dedicated to outstanding research and excellence in education. Faculty study cardiovascular disease and hypertension, train independent scholars and PhD graduates, and offer programs leading to the PhD. Graduates compete for positions in medical schools, universities, government, and industry.

Job Summary

This position provides administrative and technical oversight in a cardiorenal research laboratory in the Department of Physiology.

Responsibilities include:

  • Ensure research protocols are followed and safety guidelines are observed in accordance with institutional and government regulations.
  • Manage laboratory resources; provide teaching and technical oversight to trainees and research staff.
  • Process data, present findings, and assist PI (Dr. Alison Kriegel) with current and future research applications and programs of study.
  • Coordinate administrative and technical arrangements of animal models and maintain records related to use.

Research in the Kriegel laboratory focuses on:
1) molecular changes associated with hypertension and/or kidney pathology, and
2) how chronic kidney disease leads to cardiovascular disease in adults and children. The lab applies cutting-edge molecular technologies to study pathophysiological processes. Projects include work in cell and animal models and translational studies involving human subjects.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Lab Management — Coordinate research activities in the lab, instruct research staff and students, and advise regarding research techniques.
  • Animal Management — Coordinate administrative and technical arrangements of animal models, maintain records, perform colony maintenance and surgical procedures (injections, gavage, euthanasia). Assist PI with animal protocol preparation and submission.
  • Experiments — Perform complex data analysis, plan research protocols, supervise execution, analyze data, and prepare publication-ready figures.
  • Fiscal Management — Track and monitor budgetary resources; interface with vendors and administration for orders, tracking, and payments.
  • Safety and Compliance — Ensure safe operation, monitor resource use, and ensure compliance with federal and institutional guidelines.
  • Grant Development — Assist PI with data for grant applications; contribute to composing, editing and publication of findings.
  • Other — Perform other duties incidental to the work described.
Required Qualifications

Master's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or related natural, life, health care or materials science with relevant research experience, or a Bachelor's degree with a minimum of three years' research and/or clinical experience and supervisory experience.
