Security Officer I – Plant Scherer Job Summary

The Security Officer protects Georgia Power employees, contractors, visitors, and property at Plant Scherer. Responsibilities include enforcing rules and regulations, responding to alarms, managing access control, and coordinating with state and local law enforcement.

• Education: High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
• License & Training:
  • Valid Georgia driver’s license.
  • Armed Security Officer License issued by the State Board of Private Detective and Security Agencies.
  • Background check clearance by the Georgia Board of Private Detective and Security Agencies.
  • State‑mandated private security officer training.
  • Pass company psychological test, physical, background, and drug test.
  • Qualify with firearms (handgun and shotgun) at least twice annually with a passing score of 80% or better.
  • Undergo O.C. Pepper Spray training as required.
  • Pass weapon re‑qualification during nights and days.
• Experience: Military, law enforcement, corrections, or armed security experience preferred. Knowledge of criminal justice system desired. Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Skills & Abilities:
  • Strong oral and written communication, problem solving, decision making, negotiation.
  • Attention to detail, confidentiality, and discretion.
  • Teamwork and ability to work independently as needed.
  • Ability to operate electronic security systems and direct traffic.
  • First-aid/CPR proficiency.
  • Experience with plant operations and power plant environment.
  • Spanish fluency a plus.
• Other: Must be 21 years old; must work rotating shifts and in severe weather conditions; must have a clean driving record for at least one year; must satisfy all state and federal firearm regulations; must be able to obtain a valid Georgia driver’s license.

• Protect employees, contractors, visitors, and property.
• Enforce all plant security policies and procedures.
• Respond to alarms, security requests, and incidents promptly.
• Process personnel for access authorization to the plant.
• Operate and maintain electronic security and traffic control systems.
• Assist in emergency response and communication with outside agencies.
• Provide first-aid and CPR assistance when needed.
• Collaborate with other security personnel and support departmental objectives.

• Routine demands include lifting 40 pounds, standing up to 5.5 hours, walking 2.5 hours, driving 5.5 hours, climbing stairs (125 at one time), and performing the listed abilities (balance, reach, etc.).
• Emergency demands include running 100 yards in 90 seconds, climbing 35 feet of stairs in 60 seconds, lifting 35 pounds and carrying 50 yards in 90 seconds.
