The North Carolina Zoo seeks an experienced Security Guard for its second shift Security team. This position provides after-hours safety and security, including emergency response for Zoo life-support systems.
Key Responsibilities- Operate Zoo-wide communication systems, including radio dispatch, phone lines, alarm panels, key access, and video surveillance.
- Control access to the 2,800 acre site and identify unusual, suspicious, or hazardous situations, taking appropriate action.
- Patrol interior and exterior facilities to protect buildings, grounds, guests, staff, exhibits, and collections from fire, theft, damage, and other hazards.
- Recognize, respond to, and assist in emergencies following NIMS and NC Zoo policies, contacting appropriate personnel or emergency services as needed.
- Monitor life safety systems, respond to alarms, and perform basic mechanical troubleshooting on equipment.
- Interact with guests during closing procedures, overnight camps, and after hours events, enforcing policies diplomatically.
- Maintain accurate records and prepare written reports as required.
Demonstrated experience in safety and security practices and emergency handling in large public facilities. Demonstrated experience with security equipment maintenance and repair processes. Proven knowledge of emergency and non-emergency protocols for contacting staff and outside agencies after hours (Continuity of Operations Plan – COOP). Knowledge of Incident Command structure and the ability to function as Incident Commander until relieved.
Position/Physical Requirements- Work schedule:
Second Shift: 4:00 pm to 12:00 am, with a rotating schedule that includes weekends and holidays. This position is designated as Essential/Mandatory and is required to work adverse weather events and may be called to work special events. Must be able to work a rotating schedule that involves working weekends, holidays and after regular work shifts. - Required to participate in the Zoo’s occupational health program.
- Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
- Must have the physical ability to sit, bend, reach, stand, walk, lift and carry 30 lbs., and up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
- Must be able to work in both indoor and outdoor environments.
- Must be able to drive motor vehicles during the day and at night.
- Must be able to complete First Aid CPR AED course within six months of employment and remain certified.
- Must be able to work independently without direct supervision.
- Must be able to react calmly and effectively during emergency situations.
- Must be able to employ a systematic and logical approach to enforce park regulations tactfully and courteously.
- Must be able to use proper radio procedures and maintain good phone etiquette.
- Must possess basic computer skills, including PC operation, word processing and data entry.
