- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Required
- School Passenger and School (P&S) Bus required within six months of hire (Required)
- Master Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) School Bus Technician and T8 Truck Preventive Maintenance and Inspections required within 12 months of hire (Required)
- S7 School Bus Air Conditioning Systems & Controls certification Preferred
- H.S. Diploma or General Education Degree or equivalent (Required)
- Automotive/diesel service technician training at an accredited technical school (Preferred)
- 7 years experience as an automotive/diesel service technician (Required)
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions quickly and accurately
- Knowledge of motor vehicle parts, materials, maintenance tools, hazards, and safety procedures
- Ability to train and supervise other technicians and helpers
- Knowledge of the handling and disposal of hazardous wastes
- Ability to use computers, vehicle maintenance software, diagnostic software, and computerized test equipment to diagnose problems and make adjustments to engines, electrical systems, and other vehicle components and subsystems
- Ability to use welding and flame‑cutting equipment to perform vehicle repair work
- Supervise and perform the maintenance and repair operations of the Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) school bus and support vehicle fleet.
- Support Lead Automotive/Diesel Technician in conducting shop operations and services.
- Lead shop personnel in absence of the Lead Automotive/Diesel Technician.
- Supervise and perform preventive and corrective maintenance services and safety inspections as directed and according to established standards.
- Perform maintenance actions listed on the preventive maintenance work order.
- Inspect motor vehicles using inspection checklists and criteria as directed.
- Review operator complaint and vehicle maintenance history as appropriate.
- Perform routine diagnosis and accomplish repair and/or rebuild actions.
- Document repair actions and inspection results and record labor, parts, and supplies used according to established procedures.
- Ensure shop personnel operates in a safe and secure environment.
- Wear appropriate safety gear, to include eye and hearing protection, safety shoes and support the Lead Automotive/Diesel Technician in enforcing same protocol among all team members.
- Conduct ongoing risk assessments to ensure shop safety.
- Research technical manuals, service bulletins and instructions, equipment diagrams, and parts catalogs in hard copy and on the internet.
- Locate and follow recommended service, diagnostic, repair, installation, removal, and safety procedures.
- Determine replacement and substitute parts needed to perform repairs.
- Provide and maintain automotive/diesel service technician tool chest and hand tools.
- Assume responsibility for equipment, tools, and materials issued for working on motor vehicles.
- Obtain and maintain an adequate inventory of serviceable technician provided hand tools as determined by supervisor.
- Maintain and account for all special tools, parts, supplies, and equipment issued to the employee.
- Clean and store tools promptly after use and clean the shop bays.
- Supervise, schedule, and train automotive/diesel technicians, private contractors, and trades helpers.
- Provide excellent customer service to all district personnel and customers.
- Promote teamwork and mutual support among fleet maintenance and other district employees.
- Be available to work assigned shift as directed.
- Work night shift work hours as directed.
- Respond to work requirements any time on any day of the week when assigned to on‑call duty.
- Be on call for necessary work 24‑hours per day, 7 days per week.
