Job SummaryPosition requires installation, replacement, or repairs to HVACR equipment including chillers, air conditioning, motors, heating units, heat pumps, air compressors, heating equipment, boilers, burners, intake & exhaust fans, humidifiers, controls, split systems, air dryers, & packaged units. Assists in planning, scheduling, and executing major HVACR system repair projects such as replacing air handling units, chillers, or boilers and leads emergency repair efforts.
Inspects & troubleshoots HVACR systems and components, evaluates operating status, identifies necessary repairs and recommends appropriate course of action. Oversees and plans assigned work orders using Facilities Work Management system to prioritize and schedule work. Identifies options, develops solutions, and takes action when responding to stakeholder requests. Serves in on‑call status and remains work‑ready during scheduled on‑call periods or rotations.
Responsible for training, assisting, or assigning tasks to lower‑level staff.
- Perform preventative maintenance on HVAC equipment based on manufacturer requirements; document corrective actions in work orders; schedule maintenance so as not to disrupt operations; keep records of completed maintenance; communicate shutdowns and completion to supervisor.
- Respond to work orders promptly; troubleshoot and repair HVAC systems efficiently; engage with other trades as needed; schedule shutdowns with supervisor; communicate status and future work to supervisor; document corrective actions in work orders.
- Utilize critical thinking and strong problem‑solving skills to make decisions and communicate with Facilities Leadership (Leadership).
- Estimate materials needed and record time and materials expended; prepare and submit material requisitions; read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and shop drawings; perform shutdowns of assigned systems for maintenance or projects (Contract Management).
- Provide professional, accurate, and timely written and verbal communications to Facilities staff and other university staff (Communications); maintain positive collaborative relationships with Facility Operations and customers.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High School diploma or GED from a recognized state or federal accredited organization.
- 3+ years of experience in the HVACR field.
- Valid driver’s license and approval from Public Safety to drive AU vehicles.
- EPA Certification 608 Type II or higher.
- Vocational degree in HVACR from a recognized accrediting organization.
- 6 or more years of applicable electrical experience.
- HVACR Contractor (non‑restricted) license from the State of Georgia.
- NATE Certification.
Requires moderate physical exertion daily, including walking, lifting up to 75 lbs, kneeling, and crawling.
KnowledgeGeneral mechanical aptitude; safely and effectively operate hand tools; physically enter and work inside small, confined spaces such as boilers, vaults, and pressure vessels; climb ladders and work at various heights.
Skills- Respond to work orders promptly.
- Communicate with customers about work order status.
- Troubleshoot and repair HVAC systems efficiently.
- Engage with other trades as needed to complete work orders.
- Schedule shutdowns with supervisor to minimize disruption.
- Shift: Days; required on‑call status during scheduled on‑call periods or rotations.
- Pay band: 7.
- Salary commensurate with qualifications within the established range.
