Maintenance Worker
This position reports to a Supervisor, a Foreman, or a Crew Leader. The incumbent is responsible for repairing roads, installing signs, maintaining right-of-ways, and constructing and maintaining drainage systems across the County.
Work is performed outdoors and may include exposure to inclement weather, dust, noise, and hazardous machinery. Duties involve sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, and occasionally lifting objects over 50 pounds. The worker must be able to distinguish varying shades of color.
Basic literacy, numeracy, and a high school level of education are required. No prior experience is needed for the fundamental tasks of the position, though experience is an asset.
PRINCIPALACCOUNTABILITIES
- Repairs asphalt roads, including edging, water cuts, and potholes.
- Installs and maintains road signs, including street markers.
- Installs and maintains drainage ditches, placing rip rap and removing obstructions from culverts and storm drains.
- Removes overgrowth obstructing road sign visibility and clears underbrush from road shoulders, including chemical weed suppression.
- Repairs and maintains driveways.
- Pours cement for curbs, traps, and crack patching.
- Drives and performs general maintenance on trucks used in delivering materials.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of construction principles.
- Skill in basic carpentry.
- Skill in masonry.
- Skill in spraying chemical herbicides.
- Skill in stenciling.
- Skill in using equipment such as a chainsaw, auger, and jackhammer.
- Skill in operating equipment such as a truck and backhoe.
Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a high school level. Possession of a valid driver’s license for the class of vehicles or equipment operated. Ability to pass the Georgia D.O.T. Flagging Procedures Course. Possession of or ability to obtain a High School Diploma or G.E.D. within six months of employment is required. A combination of education and/or work experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.
