Position: Utility Worker I (Water)

About Us:

The City of Fulton owns a municipal water system that currently serves approximately 5,000 customers. The water system is comprised of six deep wells located throughout the city, eight booster pumps, three elevated towers, three ground storage facilities, and a network of approximately 90 miles of distribution mains. The elevated towers have a storage capacity of 1.5 million gallons, and the ground storage facilities have a capacity of 3.06 million gallons.

Position Overview:

Position assists with on‑going water line operations. Installs, maintains and repairs water & sewer pipelines, taps, valves, meter services, fire hydrants, and manholes, evacuates and shoring trenches, backfills, cuts, patches, repairs and resurfaces streets.

Experience, Education, and Training:
  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic knowledge of the operation/maintenance of water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
Requirements:
  • Must pass pre‑employment drug testing and submit to periodic drug testing as required by applicable laws.
  • May be required to work weekends or a variety of shifts.
  • Subject to emergency call‑in.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Must have no felony convictions.
  • Must have a valid CDL (A or

    B) Drivers' License or must take and pass, at minimum, the written portion of the Commercial Driver's License (CDL) exam (permit) within 90 days of hire.
  • Must obtain a class “B” CDL at a minimum within the 6‑month probationary period.
Essential Functions:
  • Receives notification of maintenance projects, and determines appropriate tools, equipment and supplies needed to complete the assignment assuring thoroughness and safety.
  • Surveys the job site to secure area and posts signs assuring safety.
  • Operates or assists in excavation procedures following all safety precautions.
  • Determines specific area of lines to be repaired/maintained and performs maintenance assuring compliance with State Dept of Natural Resources and City regulations.
  • Deals with the public, contractors and internal staff in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Responds to requests by immediate supervisor in an accurate, complete and timely manner.
  • Performs procedures in a skilled manner: hand digs around existing utilities to ensure that no lines are damaged, install all lines to the proper depth, ensures that all repairs are correct and complete, including properly installing stainless steel clamps.
  • Secures incomplete job sites at the close of the day, assuring public safety and security of the project.
  • Follows all safety procedures including the use of all safety equipment.
  • Assists in completing any required follow‑up and paperwork steps to complete project.
