OVERVIEW
The Superintendent, Automation (Project Field Lead / On-Site Control Systems Lead) provides dedicated, on-site field leadership, supervision, and technical oversight for complex Building Automation System (BAS) installations specifically serving as the primary field leader for our critical projects.
The Superintendent plays a critical role in minimizing inefficiencies, maintaining full-time safety oversight, and driving schedule adherence. This role combines hands-on technical execution, subcontractor management, pre-commissioning checks, and quality assurance to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to strict quality standards and safety.
RESPONSIBILITIESOn-Site Field Leadership & Project Execution
- On-Site Operations: Maintain a full-time, direct management presence on the job site, directing day-to-day installation activities and managing low-voltage electrical subcontractors and field technicians.
- Technical Quality & Installation: Perform and oversee low-voltage wiring, sensor/actuator mounting, control panel terminations, and pre-commissioning checks per project drawings, specifications, and ANSI/TIA/EIA-862 cabling standards.
- Subcontractor Management: Supervise low-voltage electrical subcontractors to ensure installation quality, minimize rework, and keep installation milestones aligned with the master project schedule.
- Project Coordination: Work directly with the assigned Project Manager, Operations Manager, General Contractor, mechanical contractors, and client site representatives to resolve field issues quickly, perform job-site surveys, and prevent schedule delays.
Safety, Quality Assurance, & Compliance
- Safety Leadership: Drive a zero-injury safety culture on site. Ensure 100% compliance with OSHA, NEC, and company safety standards, including personal protective equipment (PPE), lift operation, and site-specific safety protocols.
- Documentation & As-Builts: Accurately label all components/cabling, maintain updated redline drawings to reflect as-built field conditions, and coordinate formal commissioning handoffs with the Project Manager.
- Field Mentorship: Provide ongoing technical guidance, best-practice training, and safety mentorship to junior field installers and technicians assigned to the project.
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPIs)
- Safety: Maintain a 0 Recordable Injury record on site and sustain a 0-accident driving record.
- Project Profitability & Margin Retainage: Execute field labor and subcontractor oversight efficiently to maintain or exceed defined project profit margins (30% margin target).
- Quality & Rework: Minimize installation rework through first-pass quality control during pre-commissioning.
- Schedule Adherence: Achieve all assigned field installation and pre-commissioning milestones on or ahead of the project schedule.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
- Required Experience: Minimum of 5+ years of progressive experience in low-voltage HVAC controls installation, BAS field lead roles, or commercial electrical systems supervision.
- Education: High school diploma or GED required. Technical degree or trade certifications in HVAC/Controls preferred.
- Safety Certification: OSHA 10 required; OSHA 30 preferred.
Technical Skills
- Advanced working knowledge of commercial/industrial HVAC fundamentals, mechanical equipment, and non-proprietary BAS architectures.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Distech Controls
, Tridium Niagara (AX/N4), and/or Schneider Electric Controls
. - Mastery in reading and interpreting complex control schematics, mechanical drawings, and electrical blueprints.
- Strong expertise in low-voltage panel terminations, conduit bending, structured cabling, BACnet networking, and digital multi-meter troubleshooting.
