Overview
This position performs regular dispatching duties that include receiving and transmitting emergency radio and telephone calls and dispatching emergency personnel and equipment under stressful conditions. The employee will also be responsible for the maintenance, accuracy, and security of department records.
Responsibilities- Receive emergency calls by telephone or radio and dispatch appropriate personnel and equipment.
- Receive calls for information and assistance and determine appropriate action.
- Greets people and answers requests for assistance.
- Receive messages and requests by phone or radio from field personnel and take appropriate action.
- Prepare and maintain a variety of records and logs.
- Ensure office supplies are ordered and properly stocked.
- Perform general clerical duties in support of assigned office activities.
- Issue permits.
- Calculate, receive, record, and process payment for licenses, permits, and other fees.
- Receive, open, sort, and distribute incoming mail.
- Enter data into computer, print reports, and verify accuracy of data.
- Monitor CCTV cameras and support security of the Public Safety facility.
- Perform other related work as required.

- Ability to gain basic knowledge of principles, procedures, and equipment used in law enforcement and firefighting.
- Ability to develop and exhibit knowledge of modern principles and practices of emergency dispatch.
- React quickly and calmly in emergencies.
- Obtain NCIC certification.
- Obtain knowledge regarding federal, state, and local regulations concerning radio communications.
- Learn and utilize various computer software programs.
- Develop and exhibit considerable knowledge of the geography of the City and County, including locations of streets and important buildings.
- Read and interpret urban and rural area maps.
- Think clearly and respond quickly, accurately, and calmly in emergency situations.
- Speak the English language clearly and correctly with a courteous tone of voice.
- Clearly communicate.
- Operate radio transmitting and receiving equipment using headset, manual switches, keyboard, video display monitor, and multiple pedal controls while sitting.
- Develop working knowledge of the rules and regulations of the City and the Public Safety Department.
- Use mature judgment and make correct decisions.
- Record detailed descriptions and incidents quickly and accurately.
- Be a self‑starter, highly motivated, and committed to accomplishing tasks.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other departments, representatives of outside agencies, and the public.
- Not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
Work Environment:
Indoors in a non-hazardous setting.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to hear 25 decibels or less at 500, 4000 Hz, and points in between, accurately interpret what is heard, and visual acuity correctable to 20/20.
Valid Kansas Driver's License.
