Position: Senior Auditor- Office of the State Auditor

Senior Auditor – Two Vacancies

Salary Range: $67,306.61 – $95,038.38 (includes an 8.66% stipend). Minimum starting salary established at $77,454.59 annually. Position is not eligible for visa sponsorship or STEM OPT extensions.

Job Overview

Perform independent, objective audits of the State’s annual financial statements and compliance with federal program regulations. Work ensures that funds are spent legally and properly, managing risk and providing assurance to Maine’s government entities.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct supervision to staff auditors by reviewing work for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to professional auditing standards.
  • Research state and federal laws and regulations to ensure proper administration of state and federal programs.
  • Analyze complex financial statements of the State of Maine to support independent opinion that statements comply with GASB principles.
  • Effectively communicate audit findings and recommended corrective actions to agency personnel.
  • Conduct special projects approved by the State Auditor.
  • Provide technical assistance to senior staff in other agencies.
  • Interpret laws, regulations, and changes in accounting principles.
  • Review work of professional staff for accuracy and completeness.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of accounting and auditing principles, GAO and AICPA standards and practices.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience conducting audits of governmental entities and interpreting federal and state regulations.
  • Ability to prepare audit findings, recommend corrective action, and secure facts through investigation.
  • Strong analytical skills for complex financial statements and IT audits.
  • Research skills for laws, regulations, and technical accounting issues.
  • Experience implementing new accounting and auditing pronouncements.
  • Ability to review professional staff work for accuracy and adherence to standards.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or related field and three (3) years of progressively responsible auditing experience, or one (1) year of directly related auditing experience in a government environment that includes supervisory responsibilities.
  • Alternative qualifications include ten (10) years of professional accounting or auditing experience, CPA/CIA/CISA certification, a Master’s Degree with one year of audit experience, or eligibility to sit for the CPA examination with specified coursework.
  • Special consideration for candidates with CPA designation or those progressing toward certification.
