About Us

HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is responsible for the administration of criminal, civil and family Courts and Tribunals in England and Wales. Our role supports court users and colleagues within HMCTS, where people and businesses access potentially life‑changing justice.

Your Role

As an Operational Support Officer you will work as part of a team to progress cases through the court and tribunal system, providing customer service and administrative support to functions within HMCTS. Your day‑to‑day duties will involve preparing papers and files for court, tribunals and hearings, maintaining accurate digital records, communicating with court users and the public, and ensuring smooth running of court proceedings.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare papers and files for court, tribunals, hearings and meetings, including processing and handling sensitive information and ensuring accurate outcomes.
  • Create and update records digitally, interpreting required information accurately.
  • Communicate with the public, the judiciary, other court and tribunal users, and representatives of other agencies.
  • Support the smooth running of court proceedings, preparing court/hearing rooms and ensuring proceedings run efficiently.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for all court users, meeting members of the public, including vulnerable witnesses, and their legal representatives.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
  • Customer service skills and the ability to work in a service‑led, customer‑facing environment.
  • Digital and administrative skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills, with confidence in person, over the telephone, digitally and in written communication.
  • Resilience and empathy when dealing with sensitive information and situations.
  • Teamwork skills, capable of working collaboratively and flexibly to achieve business objectives.
Working Hours & Patterns

Standard full‑time working hours are 37 hours per week (Monday to Friday). HMCTS welcomes part‑time, flexible and job‑sharing working patterns where they meet the demands of the role and business needs. Minimum part‑time consideration is 30 hours across four days.

  • UK nationals
  • Nationals of the Republic of Ireland
  • Nationals of Commonwealth countries who have the right to work in the UK
  • Nationals of the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein, and family members who have settled or pre‑settled status under the European Union Settlement Scheme (EUSS)
  • Nationals of the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein who have made a valid application for settled or pre‑settled status under the EUSS
  • Individuals with limited leave to remain or indefinite leave to remain who were eligible to apply for EUSS on or before 31 December 2020
  • Turkish nationals, and certain family members of Turkish nationals who have accrued the right to work in the Civil Service
Skills & Assessment

The selection process includes a Statement of Suitability, where candidates demonstrate transferable skills in customer service, digital and administrative skills, attention to detail, communication, resilience, empathy, and teamwork.

Security Clearance

DBS Basic clearance will be required.
