Performs traffic control duties in concurrence with MOT and construction crews.
Key Duties- Perform flagging and other traffic control duties as required.
- Direct traffic flow safely around workers/construction zone.
- Effectively communicate with site workers to provide correct direction to motorists.
- Record and report vehicle information of disobedient/unsafe drivers as needed.
- Follow and adhere to all Blythe and NCDOT safety standards and guidelines in all traffic and construction zones.
- Follow recommended methods and procedures set forth by supervisor for traffic maintenance operations.
- Place barrels, signs, barricades, traffic cones, etc. as needed.
- Remain observant of traffic and surroundings at all times.
- Effectively communicate with co-workers to facilitate traffic movement.
General
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each Key Duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.
Education and Experience
Three (3) or more years experience as a Certified Flagger in the heavy highway industry preferred. Flagger certification required. Must be able to understand work directions and communicate effectively with management and fellow employees.
- Constant physical effort, including standing, for at least eight hours per day. Ability to stand for extended periods, stoop, bend, and crouch.
- Ability to lift and carry, on a frequent basis, at least 50 pounds and sometimes up to 90 pounds.
- Physical dexterity involving stretching, proper placement of legs, and use of arms and hands in repetitive motions.
- Maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities of the construction site.
- Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.
- Maintain sufficient skill and visual acuity to provide direction and flagging for motorists under varying light, darkness, and weather conditions.
- Work performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Periodic exposure to high levels of noise, grease, and dust typical of construction projects.
- Regular work near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
- Potential contact with substances such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel, and ready‑mixed concrete.
- Assess work environment for possible hazards and ensure training is adequate.
- Use proper personal protective equipment and tools appropriately.
- Speak up if seeing an unsafe act.
- Identify and turn in near‑miss reports.
- Ask for help when needed to perform tasks safely.
- Consider safer ways to perform work and communicate them.
