Position Overview

As a School Social Worker, you will assist in the development of students’ personal, emotional, and social growth to enable them to benefit from their educational program. Effective communication skills are required to work collaboratively with related service providers, coordinate with general education staff, and work with families and outside agencies.

Reports To: Special Services Director and Building Principal

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Social Work
  • Valid State of Maine Social Worker license
  • Successful experience working with school-age children
  • Experience working with students with special needs
  • Experience collaborating with outside agencies
  • Strong communication, organizational, diagnostic, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative team
Responsibilities Student-Centered
  • Provide individual and/or group services for identified students
  • Consult with guidance counselors, school nurses, school psychologists, principals, classroom teachers, and special education teams as needed
  • Assist in student crisis management and coordinate follow-up supports with staff, families, and students
Communication
  • Meet and consult with parents/guardians regarding student-related issues
  • Provide support services and referral resources for special education students and their families
  • Complete family/social histories as determined by the special education team
  • Participate in school and district crisis intervention response teams
Organized Approach
  • Assist in the development and monitoring of positive behavior support plans
  • Support families in developing and monitoring home/school behavior transition plans
Operational Excellence
  • Serve as liaison between school, families, and community service providers (e.g., hospitals, clinicians, counselors)
  • Participate as a member of special education teams, including attendance at meetings and IEP participation
  • Support development of annual goals, objectives, and quarterly progress updates for social work services
  • Assist with re-entry planning following suspension, hospitalization, or out-of-district placement
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Services
  • Resourceful: Uses available resources to maximize student support

  • Analytical thinking: Uses data to inform intervention and decision-making

Terms of Employment

Regular school year for professional staff. Salary determined by applicable collective bargaining agreement and Board policy.
