Job Description
As an Assistant Transportation Engineer for the Regional Program Interstate Team, you will perform a variety of moderately complex engineering functions in support of design, estimating, construction, contract development and the maintenance of transportation infrastructure.
Responsibilities- Act as an inspector in the field: verify, measure, and document work performed by private contractors; interpret plans and specifications that relate to the project; ensure compliance with contract, department policies, procedures and specifications; sample and test construction materials; assist in final project documentation for project close‑out.
- Assist in plan and contract development: develop plans, specifications, and government estimates for interstate or other highway projects; prepare contract packages; review preliminary cost estimates and contract documents for completeness; compile and assemble final contract package documents for advertisement; assist with plan‑sheet template creation for use in the Regional Program; assist in specification updates, changes, or new specification development.
- Act as a Resident Inspector on selected projects and be introduced to project management principles and advanced technical engineering duties.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a closely related field; or non‑engineering graduates must possess a Certification of Engineer‑Intern issued by the State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers.
- Certification as Engineer Intern issued by the Maine State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers (required for non‑degreed candidates).
All employees must obtain the required certifications prior to attaining permanent status in this class.
