This position involves independent judgment assisting in the supervision of engineers and other staff in traffic engineering and operations. The work is performed independently and subject to review by the State Traffic Engineer (STE) and the Assistant State Traffic Engineer (ASTE).

• Assist the STE in Traffic Analysis Management and Evaluation (TAMEing) and Maintenance of Traffic Plan review on all projects.
• Run and provide direction to the monthly TAMEing meeting, develop TAMEing certifications, institute associated policies, and develop methodologies/procedures to implement TAMEing requirements.
• Oversee preparation of TAMEing specifications for all projects and train staff on TAMEing and Maintenance of Traffic Plans.
• Serve as primary point of contact for work zone safety, including formal reviews and safety initiative coordination with stakeholders.
• Act as engineering supervisor for Transportation Management Center (TMC) staff operating 24/7, providing support for staff needs, real‑time operational issues, and assistance with the Emergency Operations Center as needed.
• Serve as one of the duty officers for the TMC, rotating responsibility to communicate significant incidents to relevant MaineDOT leadership.
• Support statewide Transportation Incident Management (TIM) efforts, coordinating with TIM trainers and assisting with acquisition of incident management field safety devices.
• Liaise with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles on oversized load permits, reviewing applications and commenting on proposed routes.
• Prepare plans and specifications for traffic engineering related projects.
• Receive and investigate requests and complaints from legislators, local officials, private citizens, commercial interests, and other state agencies; work toward resolution.
• Participate as part of the traffic management/leadership team in staff and project meetings.

Licensure as a Professional Engineer plus at least two (2) years of work experience beyond licensure demonstrating performance of significantly complex engineering science, competency in evaluating risk, and application of sound engineering judgment in planning, project development, and/or maintenance of public works structures and facilities.

Licensure as a Professional Engineer issued by the Maine State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers.

Dental insurance coverage: the State pays 100% of employee‑only premiums ($358 annually).

Retirement: the State contributes 18.91% of the employee's pay to the Maine Public Employees Retirement System (MainePERS). Additional wellness benefits are available through the Office of Employee Health and Wellness. Benefits may vary by collective bargaining agreements and are prorated for part‑time positions.
