Job Description:

This is licensed professional engineering work of a supervisory nature in the field of geotechnical engineering, primarily focused on senior level oversight of the geotechnical unit within the Bridge Program, which is responsible for delivering a wide range of capital bridge projects through design and construction.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

Manage geotechnical consultant workflow by assigning work, reviewing proposals, tracking progress, and managing budget.

Perform QC/QA for both in-house and consultant led geotechnical deliverables, such as Geotechnical Design Reports, calculations, design plans, and specifications.

Review drilling requests, borings logs, lab testing programs, interpretive subsurface profiles, soil reports, and foundation recommendations for all in-house prepared project deliverables.

Support internal staff in preparation/review of final plans, specifications, and Contractor submittals as it relates to the geotechnical discipline.

Affixes own Maine Professional Engineer’s seal/stamp with signature to certify drawings, reports, or other professional work of direct professional involvement, knowledge, and responsible charge.

Trains, mentors, and coaches subordinate Licensed Professional Engineers and Assistant Transportation Engineers to build competency and proficiency in geotechnical evaluation and design of bridges.

Serve as geotechnical practice lead by maintaining the Department’s geotechnical and foundation related design policies/practices, reviewing and evaluating ramifications of changes to national standards, such as the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, attending applicable industry conferences, and staying current with new research and emerging geotechnical engineering technologies.

This position may require periodic field work to monitor subsurface exploration programs and to provide support to construction personnel on geotechnical construction activities.

To be minimally qualified for this position candidates must provide evidence of the following experience:

Licensure as a Professional Engineer plus two (2) years of work experience beyond such licensure which demonstrates the performance of significantly complex engineering science, competency in evaluating risk, and applying sound engineering judgement as it applies to planning, project development, and/or maintenance of public works structures and facilities.

Licensing/Registration/Certification Requirements: (These must be met by all employees prior to attaining permanent status in this class).Licensure as a Professional Engineer as issued by the Maine State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers.
