Salary: $47,174.40 - $65,832.00 per year
Guided by environmental policy and protection, the Environmental Licensing Specialist I reviews development proposals to determine compliance with Maine’s environmental laws and regulations, and manages the licensing process within the Department of Environmental Protection.
Responsibilities- Analyze technical and scientific information on license applications and evaluate compliance with environmental laws, rules, regulations, and policies.
- Draft decision documents and interpret applicable legal provisions.
- Work directly with applicants, consultants, attorneys, and other stakeholders through pre‑application and pre‑submission meetings to provide regulatory guidance.
- Coordinate with other state resource agencies and federal/municipal officials to assess potential environmental impacts of proposed developments.
- Conduct site visits and participate in public meetings, hearings, and administrative appeals before the Board of Environmental Protection.
- Perform duties with limited oversight while gaining experience.
- Assist in managing remote work as permitted by Department guidelines.
- Education, training, or experience in environmental science or a related scientific field, or proven experience analyzing and processing permits, applications, or licenses.
- Experience working with environmental laws, regulations, and complex technical evaluations.
- Strong analytical and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in GIS/database management or other computer skills.
- Experience in customer service and interpersonal relationships in a fast‑paced work environment.
- Advanced knowledge of natural resources protection and/or management.
- Interest in the implementation of environmental policy.
- Experience in GIS/database management or other relevant computer skills.
