Personal Support Specialist PSS

Job Description

Personal Support Specialist (PSS) provides hands‑on assistance to people with disabilities and older adults in their daily lives. Their duties include:

• Personal hygiene:
  Helping with bathing, grooming, dressing, oral care, and safe restroom use

• Activities of daily living:
  Helping with meal preparation, feeding, and mobility

• Instrumental activities of daily living:
  Helping with use of telephone, light housekeeping, and meal preparation and service

• Other duties:
  Responding to call lights, performing scheduled activities, and documenting care

PSSs work in an assisted living environment as part of a clinical team. They provide care according to an authorized plan of care, which can vary depending on the client and the work setting.

Some qualifications for a PSS include:

• Being at least 18 years old

• Having a high school diploma or equivalent

• Being able to read, write, and follow directions

• Having a PSS certificate or agreeing to complete training and obtain a certificate within six months of hire. Having a caring attitude and strong interpersonal skills
