Summary

This position is within the Health Administration Service at the VA Maine Healthcare System and supports the surrounding catchment area. The primary purpose of this Motor Vehicle Operator position is transporting Veterans to various locations at the medical facility and any additional locations as assigned. This position is full‑time.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of 06/03/2026. A specific length of training and experience is not required, but applicants must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality to perform the duties of this position. Evidence must be supported by detailed descriptions in the resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Driver’s License Requirement:
Must possess a valid state‑issued driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle. The license will be verified at the time of interview.

Screen‑out element:
Applicants must satisfy the prescribed screen‑out element; those who do not are eliminated. Eligible applicants are then rated against the other job elements:

Experience:

Paid, volunteer, or unpaid experience is accepted for credit. Volunteer work that builds critical competencies is valued. Applicants must indicate duties, responsibilities, and hours spent for each experience. Physical requirements include light effort in operating controls and occasional emergency repairs, with potential lifting up to 40 pounds.

Duties
  • Provide transportation and patient care for Veterans traveling to treatment sites within the community and other VA Medical Centers.
  • Operate light‑duty vehicles such as sedans, minivans, 8‑passenger vans, pickup trucks, light‑duty construction utility vehicles, and patient transport vehicles to pick up and transport patients under non‑emergency conditions.
  • Drive on public roads at controlled speeds to ensure patient comfort.
  • Secure cargo to prevent damage and ensure the vehicle is not overloaded.
  • Refuel vehicles as needed prior to transport.
  • Protect materials, supplies, and equipment from the elements.
  • Transport medical and office supplies, equipment, and mail over federal, state, and local roads in all traffic conditions on specific trip assignments or regular schedules.
  • Perform routine safety and maintenance checks, including fueling, lubricants, and tire pressure.
  • Maintain cleanliness and professional appearance of the vehicle interior and exterior.
  • Complete all maintenance service records.
  • Provide courtesy rides to staff, Veterans, and visitors as needed.
  • Assist in warehouse activities such as receiving, storing, and moving materials and equipment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Undergo drug testing if selected for the VA employment; refusal to be tested will result in denial of employment. A positive drug test disqualifies an applicant.

Work Schedule:

Monday through Friday, 7:30 am–4:00 pm.

  • This position is in the Competitive Service and is a bargaining unit position.
  • The position is covered by locality‑based comparability pay.
  • Veterans’ preference does not apply for internal or other current permanent Federal agency employees.
  • Interchange Agreements:
    Employees appointed under the 38 U.S.C. 4701 (1) or (3) regulations must have served continuously for at least one year in the other merit system to be eligible for conversion to Title 5. Some exceptions may apply if tenure was acquired under a Title 5 appointment.
  • Current and former Federal employees must submit copies of their most recent SF‑50. Multiple SF‑50s may be required to show a higher grade previously held.
