Job Summary:

This open‑rank Dental Dispensary Technician position will decontaminate, clean, and provide basic maintenance of instruments and equipment in the dental operatories and clinical units as assigned. The candidate will support assignments in undergraduate dental student clinics and in four‑handed dentistry across restorative, periodontal, surgical, and other related procedures. Positions hired at the Dental Care II level will carry the same responsibilities as Dental Care I with added duties unique to the higher level.

This description summarizes the general level of work and may change as needed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Cleans and decontaminates, and maintains instruments and equipment according to established procedures and techniques.
  • Ensures proper functioning of equipment.
  • Cleans and sanitizes machines and equipment.
  • Maintains a sufficient level of sterilized instruments for distribution.
Instrument Preparation
  • Issues sterile reusable instruments to operatories and clinical units.
  • Collects used instruments and transfers them for sterilization.
  • Prepares specialized instrument setups for residents, faculty, and undergraduate students for dental treatment.
Monitoring Supplies and Materials
  • Maintains adequate inventory of supplies, equipment, and materials for the assigned clinical area.
  • Maintains comprehensive knowledge of dental materials, their use, maintenance, and storage.
Clinical Education Support
  • Supports the educational mission of the SDM, role‑modeling and coaching students on dental assistant duties during four‑handed chairside activities and clinical operations support.

Minimum Qualifications

Dental Dispensary Technician I

  • One year of current dental assisting experience. Accreditation of a dental assisting program may substitute for one year of experience; if used, attach a copy of the certificate no later than the closing date.
  • Current valid CPR and/or BLS certification.

Dental Dispensary Technician II

  • Two years of current dental assisting experience. Accreditation of a dental assisting program may substitute for one year of experience; if used, attach a copy of the certificate no later than the closing date.
  • Current valid CPR and/or BLS certification.
Preferred Qualifications (All Levels)
  • Experience with decontamination, cleaning, sterilizing, and maintenance of dental instruments and equipment.
  • Familiarity with dental instrument terminology.
  • Experience with sterilizing and dispensing dental instruments and equipment.
  • Experience preparing clinical areas in dental clinic or office settings.
  • Experience working with students and faculty in an academic or medical environment.
Additional

Preferred Qualifications (Dental Dispensary Technician II)
  • Two years of current dental assisting experience specific to the dental care specialty/unit, including decontamination, cleaning, sterilizing, and maintenance of instruments and equipment.
  • Successful completion of an accredited dental assisting program.
